We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sarah Herzdame. Check out our conversation below.
Sarah, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I have a little toddler at home so my day is very family driven.
Usually I wake up with my daughter, she loves reading books – so that’s how our day starts already. We have breakfast together and I go to work. I tattoo all day, mostly one long session on one client but sometimes I have 2 or 3.
The evening can go either way, sometimes I stay long in the shop, or I go home and have family dinner in the garden. We spent most time at home in the garden actually!
At night I have to draw for the next project.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am 37 years old, german and live in San Diego for almost 5 years now. I am tattooing for 12 years and people know my work and recognize my style. I have always worked in the direction of work I do now, black and grey, very detailed and fine but I love strong lines and black too. Just give me an idea and I can create a piece of art for you that is recognizable and unique.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I truly believed I didn’t have to learn English cause I would never be the one that travels much.
HA! Apart from ending up moving to a different country I have traveled all around the world, I spent months on the road and worked all over the place.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
For sure! Often I think, especially in the beginning.
I tent to be a perfectionist- which is probably good in my line of work and why most of us are somewhat troubled people. I am very proud of myself though, for not giving up when it was hard and things weren’t perfect.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I think so, yes. I am bad at faking it, no matter what. So I try to be myself in public and on social media. I think everyone who follows me for a long time knows that and has seen all sort of stages of me and my life.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Stop caring so much about what people think – that is something I fight on a daily basis.
