Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Thomas Bui of San Diego

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Thomas Bui. Check out our conversation below.

Thomas, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My day begins at 5am where I will glance over emails while slowly waking up. I’m out of bed at 5:30am, 6:00am Yogabox full-body sculpt class that lasts an hour. This is part of my routine 5-6 days/week.
By 8-8:30am, I’m at the office, diving into emails, phone calls, and meetings.
Throughout the day, I connect with my team, respond to more emails, and meet with various vendors as needed. I’m probably on the phone 4-5hrs a day.
We manage multiple events every day, so no two days are ever the same. Most evenings wrap up around 6:00 or 7:00pm, though some extend to 9:00pm—especially when we’re out of the office for site visits or traveling with clients. If we’re attending social events and meetings, our day ends around 10, 11pm.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Thomas Bui is an acclaimed, detail-oriented event designer whose bespoke planning style transforms weddings and corporate occasions into elevated, elegant experiences—all while providing personalized, experiences and memorable service.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
As an immigrant and first-generation American, I’m deeply grateful for the sacrifices my parents and extended family made to create the life we enjoy today. From an early age, my parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep sense of purpose. The old adage, “You have to work for what you want,” became the foundation of my character and shaped the way I lead today as a business owner. I believe in working hard, showing kindness, and treating every person with dignity and compassion—regardless of their social or financial status. I don’t believe in discrimination; I believe in humanity.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“Trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to stand out. Your story—where you come from, how you were raised, and the values your parents taught you—is your greatest strength. You don’t need to fit in to make an impact. Lead with grace, stay kind, and let your integrity shape the path ahead.”
Take a chance, don’t be afraid to fail/fall. Stand tall and proud. Many doors closed on me before it opened.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
It’s a core value I protect at all costs. No matter someone’s title, background, or financial status, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. Growing up in a Vietnamese immigrant family, I was taught to lead with humility, listen before speaking, and honor others through action—not just words. In my business and in life, respect is non-negotiable. It builds trust, invites collaboration, and creates the kind of grace-filled experiences I believe in.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not fully living in the moment.
In this fast-paced industry—and life—it’s easy to move from one event, one achievement, one milestone to the next without truly pausing to feel it. I’d regret not taking time to savor the joy, the people, the quiet victories. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about what we build, but how present we were while building it.
