Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Vanessa Barnes of Point Loma

We recently had the chance to connect with Vanessa Barnes and have shared our conversation below.

Vanessa, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are dedicated to exercise. I start by waking up, changing into my gym clothes, and heading outdoors for a walk and a workout on a path of stairs. Upon returning home, I roll out a yoga mat and complete 100 sit-ups with an 8-pound ball. Even on days when I want to sleep in, I push myself to get up and work out. This routine has taught me the discipline of tackling a task first to ensure it gets completed.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The company began as a content platform and evolved into a hybrid e-commerce and editorial brand
centered on curated, ethically-sourced contemporary fashion and accessories.
The core ethos of Fashion Mixtape is to be a transparent, globally-conscious fashion voice that blends
storytelling with sales. With a particular focus on ethically made eyewear.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Several key moments have shaped my worldview. From a negative experience, I’ve learned to be more careful about who I trust. Conversely, a positive experience has taught me that some things in life are truly meant for me, and I shouldn’t second guess myself when they feel right.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be to never stop reaching for your goals and to always give yourself permission to dream as big as possible.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the fashion industry tells itself is the supposed need for mass consumption. This idea fuels fast fashion, which is not only horrible for the environment but also frequently relies on knocking off designers who have invested their creativity into original products.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
My greatest sense of peace comes from the balance of productivity and relaxation, when I’ve achieved my weekly goals and can reward myself with a trip to the beach.
