Life and Work with Alexandra Brienne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Brienne.

Alexandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I attended SDSU immediately after high school. I was so excited to have been accepted into a good school. However, I ended up changing my major about five times and eventually dropped out because I couldn’t figure out what I was passionate about or what I wanted to do with my life. I only knew it had to be in the artistic field. Finally, months later, I decided to attend cosmetology school, specifically to specialize in hair color. I worked with a mentor for about a year and a half, where I learned valuable lessons very quickly because I was thrown into very complex color projects right away. Yes, I was definitely nervous at first but I am very thankful for that because I feel that the most effective way to learn is simply by doing. I developed a passion for all things hair color and after experiencing the love and appreciation of my clients, I can say there’s no better feeling. I am continuing to learn and grow to this day to be the best artist I can be.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe it’s ever a smooth ride for anyone. I feel everyone has to overcome different struggles no matter what path they are on. I have made my mistakes and have had crazy or unhappy clients and it is definitely both discouraging and mentally straining. I have also second guessed myself several times and have become very critical of my own work, and I want my audience to know that this is normal. For those women who are just beginning their journey in any industry, I would strongly advise maintaining a positive mindset, and never straying from reaching your goals. Any experience you have, good or bad, is a learning lesson and that is what is going to make you a stronger person and the absolute best at what you do!

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a hair color specialist. I specialize in vivid color, balayage and blonding and I am mostly known for my creative color work. I am most proud of my creativity and my passion for the artistic element of my industry. What sets me apart from others within the industry is my sincerity and the level of care I have for my work and most of all, how my clients feel. I feel like a lot of stylists tend to lose their passion for their craft and in turn it becomes all about the financial reward. However, I think passion is the most important thing in any artistic profession and with that passion, the money will come. My number one goal (aside from keeping my client’s hair healthy) is to make damn sure my clients feel absolutely amazing. This means spending 6 to 10 hours on vivid color projects or color corrections and making sure the quality of my work is the best it can be.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I am a firm believer in feminine superiority. We are strong as hell mentally, emotionally as well as physically. We are able to openly express emotion, show strength and assertion when need be, and we have the incredible ability to bring about new life. I believe women can do just about anything especially when we build each other up with love and support. I think women are positioned for just about any opportunity they set their minds to as long as we have a clear goal.
