Life and Work with Alison Mattazaro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Mattazaro.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
So cliche but I’ve always known I wanted to do hair. After having my first daughter, I decided to leave the restaurant and management life to try for the third time to go to school for hair. Graduated cosmetology school seven years ago, and in January 2020, I will be a salon owner for two years now.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth journey. But the real question is would anyone ever appreciate an easy journey. I think the reality of things is you can achieve anything you want no matter who you are. It’s all about how bad you want it and what you choose to make a priority. Consistency is key and if you work for it, you will succeed. Now that sounds easy right? I think that’s the point keep it simple, life is not smooth and that’s the fun of it. Do not make your goals an option, make them a priority! Believe in yourself, work hard and you will be rewarded and that makes it all worth it! My advice to young women starting their journey…..well I have plenty of advice for young ladies. I’m lucky enough to have two girls of my own and a team of 10 ladies I work with every day that are amazing! My advice for young women is that you are stronger then you realize. Women are amazing… they are mothers, they are students, they are breadwinners, they are selfless, loving, strong, team players, powerful, talented, humble, need I go on!? I will!!! I think young ladies should know the power within themselves. And that comes from believing in yourself that’s all it takes! I believe young ladies should be taught independence and how to believe in their endless capabilities as a girl, young lady, and a woman. And most importantly, to show love to yourself. Fight that good fight for you and it will be worth it!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Calla Hair Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I find beauty and art in so many things. My passion is hair, I’ve always loved hair. It is my art. I have a salon in the jewel of

The hills on la Mesa Blvd. Calla Hair Studio. Calla is the Greek word for “the most beautiful” I’m grateful to be able to build relationships with women and men while making them feel good about themselves. The world has so much in common with one another whether you live in La Mesa or On the other side of the world. and being able to learn and share stories, connections and make people feel beautiful through my art is a blessing to me. I love doing color and cuts. It’s a whole package. Being able to connect and learn about my clients and who they are in a short consultation and bring out that beauty in two hours is something really special. My salon is definitely first a business, clients want to feel special they want to be put first, as they should, they should be treated above and beyond, and when you care about what you do, who you are, and enjoy what you’re doing it shows in your work. I’m proud of all the stylists I work with as well. I have watched them grow so much and I’m so proud of all of them because they are a huge factor to running a smooth sailing business. I work with amazing women!

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My advice for finding a mentor would find someone who’s positive first and for most. Find someone who isn’t afraid to tell you like it is and be open-minded to all of it. Learn, learn, learn but most importantly, do what feels best for you! My advice in networking is easy…. relationships! It’s all about relationships, get to know people, be kind, put yourself out there, work hard, talk to people, believe in yourself and hustle!!! Keep your goals and priorities to a minimum and focus on completing them one day at a time! It’s all in your hands.
