Life and Work with Amanda Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Wright.

Amanda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I decided to move to San Diego last year with my husband since this was his hometown and he’d always wanted to come back. It was a hard decision to make because I’d been working at the same hair salon since I got out of cosmetology school in Los Angeles for 15 years. Leaving that would mean I’d be starting all over again with trying to gain a San Diego clientele. I realized I was ready for a change in my life and decided San Diego was where I felt I belonged. I knew this was going to be a big move for my business, so my strategy was to make it a “smooth” transition which wasn’t as easy as I had imagined. For six months, I worked two days a week at the salon in Los Angeles and also three days a week at Salon Bordeaux while trying to build a clientele. It was completely exhausting but totally worth it. I was able to finish at my old salon on a good note and build a great new clientele here in San Diego. I’ve been at Salon Bordeaux for a year now and I couldn’t be happier. I love what I do, and I believe it shows through my work.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s hard to learn and grow if you never go through any challenges or obstacles in your career. There’s always bumps in the road when it comes to approaching success. There’s always those days when you second guess yourself and think, “Do I even really know what I’m doing?” or “Am I even good at this?”. When I do that I just need to take a step back, look at the bigger picture and realize how far I’ve come after working as hard as I have. Confidence is key.

Please tell us about Amanda Wright at Salon Bordeaux.
I absolutely LOVE being a hairstylist, and I’m so lucky that I can call this my profession. I specialize in hair color, cutting and above all hair extensions. Hair extensions are definitely a specialty service that requires a lot of education and experience to know what you’re doing. I have been certified in six different methods of application, therefore I’m very knowledgeable in what works best for each individual client. I’m constantly keeping up with educating myself in all services and making sure my clients get nothing but the best quality and service.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My parents are two of the most hard-working people I know. My mom had her own business since before I was born and kept that going my entire upbringing. My dad is definitely a workaholic, and even after retiring, he still can’t stop and is always starting something new to keep himself busy. I know for a fact I get my hard work ethic from the combination of the two of them. I’m so lucky to have such good role models in that sense.
