Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Luisa Gaitan and Renee Perez Scolari.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Lucky to be located on the border of México and the United States in San Diego, CA, Border Creations, an Interior Design Studio was established in 2017 as a result of the confluence between these two rich countries. Being constantly emerged in both cultures, we (co-founders Ana Luisa Gaitan and Renee Perez Scolari) consider both San Diego and Tijuana our home – allowing us to appreciate creativity and passion for design with two different perspectives.
In 2018, a year after opening our design studio, we curated an accessible furniture and home goods retail showroom that in majority showcases Mexican Hand Made products named Linea Norte. Our showroom, based in Tijuana MX offers quality artisan products to both locals and visitors. Linea Norte has recently opened their online shop and now are able to service all Mexico, USA and CAN.
Both of us happen to be San Diego Natives, raised in Tijuana MX. In 2013, Ana received a BFA in Interior Design from Design Institute of San Diego and immediately gained experience and knowledge while working for a recognized High End Residential Interior Design Firm in So. CA. That same year, Renee earned a BA in Architecture from ITESM- Institute Tecnológico de Monterrey and since then, Renee has worked in various renowned Architecture firms in both Mexico and the United States, allowing her to gain knowledge in both architectural and interior design.
These wonderful opportunities have allowed us to explore and embrace a duality of cultures that currently marks our design aesthetic. Our love for all things beautiful creates a limitless pool of inspiration for projects and collaborations. As a company, Border Creations believes in the importance of attention to detail and honest relationships with their clients, artisans, and builders in order to successfully translate design into tangible and cohesive spaces. Acknowledging the talent and craftsmanship offered by both nations, the overall intention of Border Creations is to support and encourage the use of local artisans and craftspeople from both regions to promote the essence of all things “hecho a mano” – while creating tailored spaces that translate into modern and timeless design.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success takes patience, determination and a lot of support from experts and loved ones. Our journey has not necessarily been smooth, but we value the guidance we have received from our community to navigate the path of being an entrepreneur. A solid team is crucial to enhance your business. We rely on our team of employees, contractors, collaborating partners and consultants to maintain the standards that represent our businesses.

We are passionate about all things design but focus on Interior Design. We believe that spaces can have a positive day-to-day effect on people’s well-being. Living or working in a functional and beautiful space can make all the difference in the world. Interior Design allows us to re-invent a space and reflect a story of who our clients are in a holistic and beautiful manner while keeping their everyday functional needs in mind. Color, Texture, Decorative Items, Functional Space Planning, and more all come together to create a one of a kind tailored design.
As a brand, we are most proud of our integrity and teamwork that enables us to make things happen, solve problems and meet specific needs. Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
All the above! Sometimes we listen to French music or share interesting articles with each other. Getting to know ourselves is also important, so we explore meditation, fun activities or whatever gets the creative sparks going. We follow along on social media our favorite designers, brands and artists. Pinterest and creating Design Boards are essential to our creative process. There are so many talented designers out there and we should all inspire each other in one way or another.
