Life and Work with Ashley Callahan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Callahan.

Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After receiving my license in 2012, I went right into booth rent which presented many challenges from the starting gate. I got a side job working at a bank just to make ends meet and before I knew it, I was working in a dead-end corporate job, no longer pursuing my dream. In 2016, while sitting at my desk, I realized I had put my passion for hair on the back burner and was no longer truly happy with my job or self. I took a leap of faith that day… long story short, I put in my two weeks and followed my dreams. It hasn’t been easy but with determination, hard work and confidence I have been able to build a portfolio that I am extremely happy to say are “mine.”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has those moments where you question if “this was the right choice” but I look back and wouldn’t change any moment of it. Every struggle thrown my way has shaped me into the stylist that I am today. When I hit a wall with a client’s hair, I take a moment to breathe because there’s always a solution for every challenge.

Please tell us about AshleySanDiego.
I’d like to think of myself as a “Blonding Color Correction Specialist.” It may not be an actual title but I’d put it on my name tag. I love my blonde clientele!! (*Not to say I’m not just as excited for my darker haired clients.) But there’s something about mixing up a big bowl of bleach. Having the creative freedom to paint hair makes each and every client’s final result individual and unique to them. There are a real science and technique behind the blonding process and if done correctly and safely, you can achieve beautiful results!!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I really love what social media has brought to the table for this industry. From Instagram to Facebook and all that is in between. Because of these platforms, I am able to connect with people I wouldn’t normally be able to communicate with. It gives me the opportunity to showcase my work through photographs and using hashtags for others to see my work who may not be already following me.
