Life and Work with Ashley Herzler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Herzler.

Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello! I am a makeup artist with MAC Cosmetics, but I also am a freelancer in San Diego County. I started off as a singer. I auditioned for American Idol and America’s Got Talent, but I, later on, felt that music wasn’t my calling. I knew I wanted to be an artist but didn’t know exactly what I wanted to pursue. I participated in pageants and went on to win Miss Valley Center 2016 and placed in the top five for Miss Vista 2017. I grew a passion for makeup since it was used frequently backstage. So, that leads me to where I am today which is living my dream of being a makeup artist. It’s a very pleasing career choice for myself and the people who I help. I get the opportunity to allow people to feel beautiful on the outside and within. Whether it’s their wedding day or homecoming day, I get to help individuals feel flawless. I believe that there is no boundary whether it being age, gender, or race to be an artist and wear makeup.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My path to being a makeup artist wasn’t easy. Many of my family members told me it’s just a hobby or there aren’t any career opportunities. I decided to go for it and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. My advice is don’t worry what others will think, even if it’s others who are blood-related. Do what makes you happy and satisfies your willing to be happy with the career you’re doing.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics, but I am my own brand as I freelance in the community. What sets me apart from the others is my friendly presence and that I am available. I’ve heard from my clients that some artists don’t get back to them, but I always reach out to clients who reach out to me. I try my very best to accommodate people and make them feel important. I freelance for weddings, special events, and just about anything you need me for!

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
For getting your foot in the door, I recommend playing with makeup. Find brands you love and create looks on yourself and others around you. There’s no wrong answer for makeup which I love! You can create anything you want because, like painting, it’s art! Watch some beauty gurus on YouTube and learn tips and tricks to better your artistry.
