Life and Work with Ashley Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Powell.

Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I had to learn to grow up faster then most. But I’m thankful for the struggles because, without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today and wouldn’t have stumbled across my strength I know have for myself. Although my early life was not an easy one, I have learned to overcome many obstacles. School wasn’t always my main focus growing up but I learned if you aren’t willing to learn, then no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, then no one can stop you. My education is my main priority in life and I am determined to get a degree in Education to be the teacher I needed when I was younger and to teach our future. When I do have free time from work and school, I like to express my creativity through painting, drawing, and modeling. And when I want to have fun, I love to scuba dive, snorkel, ride stand up jet skis, and be around the people I love. You can’t go back in time and change the beginning but you can stand where you are and change the ending.

Has it been a smooth road?
My life has been nowhere near a smooth road but having a good attitude is a little thing to most but can make a huge difference. In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity, and where there is an opportunity, there is a chance to grow because we don’t grow where things are easy, but where we face challenges. Stay strong and make everyone wonder how you’re still smiling.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of. What sets you apart from others?
I currently work at an afterschool program on a Native American Reservation that focuses on the care of tribal and non-tribal children anywhere between the ages 5-17 years old. I love how I can make a difference in a child’s life, although every day may not be good, there is something good in every day. From going to crafts, cooking, sports, gym, and everything in between, I learn patience, compassion, and growth within myself that I never have before. Also, working with Native youth gives me a sense of pride within because I feel the honor to teach, build, and expand their minds in this community. Although my ancestry isn’t related to this tribe, I still feel happy to know I am helping Native Kumeyaay like myself, every day.
