Life and Work with Beth Mangat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Mangat.

Beth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I went to college for something completely different than what I do today. It wasn’t till my last semester when I realized it wasn’t the profession I wanted to pursue. I’ve always had an appreciation for art, a knack for making things, and a thrill for the behind the scenes life. One thing led to another and I somehow grew an interest for flowers –wedding flowers in particular. Now I freelance as a floral designer and run my own small wedding floral business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. There were times where I forgot things, I didn’t get enough material, I ran out of time, I needed an extra hand–I can go on. But at the same time, I’m glad it never was an easy road. Trial and error were the best way for me to learn and be better at what I do. I wouldn’t have such a passion for what I do if it wasn’t for the blood, sweat, and tears.

Running your own business can be intimidating and, in the beginning, I thought it was me versus everyone else. But it was the complete opposite. There is a strong and beautiful community with small business owners, we support each other. So, my advice is to meet and befriend everyone out there whether it’s someone doing the same thing as you or completely different. Chances are, they are rooting for you to succeed.

Please tell us about avoiding + making.
I’m a floral designer for weddings, events, and installations based in San Diego. My work is garden inspired and naturally romantic. I have a big love for nature and the outdoors and try to incorporate that in my brand. I’m proud of the friendships that I have made with other creatives and even past clients.

My main focus from the start has always been art first and business second. I like to work closely with my clients to make sure my style is what they are looking for. I like to get to know them so their personalities are represented in their arrangements. Flowers are not always an easy medium to work with so I love it when my work tells a story.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Reach out in any possible way. Whether it be a friend of a friend, someone on Instagram, some one’s work you admire at a farmer’s market etc. Message them and express your interest, you have nothing to lose. I’ve had moments where I felt a little overwhelmed and wished I had someone working with me for the simple task so they might too!
