Life and Work with Brittany Aldrich (Shuff)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Aldrich (Shuff).

Brittany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a Southern California native, when I was 16 years old, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in the beauty industry working as a hairstylist. I wanted a career that I could give back to others, help give women confidence by helping them look and feel beautiful, and valuing the amazing relationships I make with my guests along the way. After making this decision, I opened up the phone book (yes, the phone book, before we had google on our cell phones) and called every salon in Oceanside and Carlsbad looking for a job as a receptionist while I finished high school. I landed a job at a salon in Oceanside soon after and quickly went from a receptionist to running the salon as a “salon coordinator.” After I graduated high school, I immediately started an apprenticeship program through the salon to get my cosmetology license which was double the hours of your typical beauty school but well worth it. The apprenticeship program allowed me to work and learn my craft in a real life salon setting, which in turn allowed me to build up such a great clientele that I was able to become an independent contractor working for myself, making my own schedule, right after passing my state boards. Being successful in this industry is not a walk in the park. It takes serious passion, talent, hard work, and constant education to stay in front of the latest styles and color techniques. I specialize in balayage, natural and classic color techniques as well as hair extensions and hair cutting techniques for all hair types. I have had the pleasure of being a hairstylist in this ever growing/changing beauty industry for 12 years now. I am so grateful and honored to have such amazing guests that love and appreciate the work I do for them and how happy they are when they leave my chair. My career as a hairstylist has been and continues to be so rewarding, and I am so fortunate that I have been able to have a successful career doing what I absolutely love, hair…and in my hometown that I love, Oceanside. I have a lot more in store for my future and I hope to make a positive impact on other women along the way.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I don’t let obstacles get in my way of pursuing my goals. I have encountered challenging clients in my career, but learning to speak the same language and having a very thorough and clear consultation is so important (with all clients). Learning to say no when you’re uncomfortable with a client and/or an unrealistic service they want is also so important!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hair by Brittany Leigh – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Providing exceptional results and excellent service to each and every guest. One of my favorite quotes, which absolutely pertains to my business is: “When you’re green, you’re growing. When you’re ripe, you rot.” So keeping up with advanced education is of the utmost importance to staying cutting edge in this ever-changing field. Continuing to reinvent myself and successfully staying in front of the latest styles and advanced color techniques specializing in soft and natural hair color, balayage, corrective color, precision hair cutting for long and short hair, razor cutting, and completely natural looking hair extensions. I have a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the hair care business and value the personal relationships I develop with my clientele along the way.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I feel that the biggest barrier for any leader female or male is “ego”, lack of hard work and lack of a full understanding of their business. A leader should set the standard for their employees/colleagues by being the hardest working, the most knowledgeable about their business and constantly learning more within their industry.
