Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Clark.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brittany. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My cookie adventure started as a hobby. I am an elementary school teacher with a flair for creativity. Cookie decorating videos initially attracted my eye and made me enthusiastic to learn more. After I gathered a few supplies and tried it out for myself, I discovered how relaxing and calming the art of cookie decorating is. After experimenting a little more, people started asking if they could buy some cookies from me. I was blown away! Happy Cookie Company naturally emerged. Fast forward just over a year, I was able to step into a part-time teaching position to allow time to explore this cookie life. This year has been a lot of fun!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all! From August 2018 to June 2019, it seemed every spare hour of time went to cookie decorating. Late nights, early mornings before work – I was probably not the most fun person to be around. Fortunately, I have a very supportive husband (who also loves cookies) and he encouraged me every bit of the way. For a while, the calm, relaxing side of decorating was lost. I was drowning beneath my full-time job and the demand for creating. Taking a risk and stepping away from a full-time job temporarily was a very difficult, but wonderful decision. I’ve been afforded the ability to pursue something I really enjoy. I’ve also started to learn balance. I will continue to learn balance as I progress, but I’ve learned that it’s okay to say no to an order because I want to be at a friend’s birthday dinner. I’m still learning a lot, but the biggest thing is to not lose myself in the process of finding something I love.
Please tell us about Happy Cookie Company.
I make delicious, custom-designed, home-baked, decorated sugar cookies! Quality, freshness, and consistency are a few of my hallmarks. I am most proud of the love that goes into each set. And along with my namesake, making people HAPPY with the gift of cookies. What sets me apart from others is the care I take in planning, organizing, and ensuring happiness with each set of cookies. I make sure my clients have a voice, know what they’re paying for, and are truly happy with the final product. My “advertisement” is limited to social media posts alone. My clients come from word of mouth, and nothing makes me happier than fulfilling orders for those clients time and time again.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My advice for finding a mentor or networking, in general, is to explore other local young entrepreneurs who are passionate about a product and sharing that product. For me, it doesn’t have to be other cookie decorators. I have a few wonderful friends in my life who run small businesses and we share ideas together, talk struggles, and celebrate successes. I’m so thankful for these ladies because a support system is essential.
