Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Keyser.
Caitlin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey began in Tbilisi, Georgia, formerly a part of Russia, in 1995. At this point, I was adopted from an orphanage that was about to close adoptions to Americans and only had two remaining healthy babies. Luckily, I was one of them and my parents were able to successfully bring me back to the United States. This is such an integral part of my story because it is through this experience and my parent’s unconditional love, support, and dedication, that I have developed the resiliency to overcome challenges in my life.
Having come from such adversity, I have been so fortunate to be guided by such an encouraging family, who never treat me as anything other than their own. This fact, along with the knowledge of my origins has instilled in me the compassion I have for others and the desire to creatively bring joy to their lives through my career of being a stylist. My hope is that my story will inspire adoptive families to provide children with the opportunities that they may otherwise not have had and to know that through persistence and love, they too can pursue their passion.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being in this industry is highly competitive, the biggest challenge is to keep yourself different from everyone else. My Advice is anything that you pursue, keep a positive head on your shoulders and continue to educate and grow yourself.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a hairstylist and I love that I am able to help people feel and look beautiful. I love to listen to my clients and be attentive to their needs.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My advice for networking is finding someone who inspires you. Follow what they do and what you like about them, then use social media, Instagram is a huge networking source for our industry.
