Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherilyn Cowell.
Cherilyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From a very young age, I had a love for creating colorful, beautiful things. I started my beauty career selling fragrances in a small department store in Central California. I moved around to several cosmetics companies, along the way, learning much about the application of makeup and products. After receiving my Esthetician license, I moved with my family down to San Diego, where I had the privilege of working with a Plastic Surgeon and was able to learn the more medical side of skin care which I incorporate into my treatments to this day.
I believe in achieving beauty in the most natural ways possible. Using products and treatments that are good for you and the planet, while also encouraging women to use whatever procedures they need to help them to achieve the skin they are happy with. In doing this, I have curated an offering of beauty products and treatments that are clean, organic and eco-friendly and am always on the hunt for the latest technology that is both healthy for you, yet still effective.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My husband and I got married and had children at a very young age, so that right there was a huge obstacle. We both worked full-time, regular jobs. When we lived in our hometown, it was a little easier because we had family to help us out with anything. Moving several hours away made things more difficult as we didn’t have people we knew and trusted to rely on.
One of the biggest challenges of being a working mom is the ability of doing just that. The working part is really redundant in that being a mom is already a more than full-time job. So, if you want to have a career on top of that, then you are really working two jobs. You need to be able to find a way to fit a 28 hour work day into 24. It’s hard. But it isn’t impossible.
A great saying in sales is “Underpromise, Overdeliver”. The same can be said when trying to start out on your own. Set up a defined timeline in which you want to get things done. Make your goals realistic and something you can actually put a checkmark next to. When you can cross “Get Business License” off your list, it’s a great accomplishment and is one step out of the way.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. If you didn’t get everything that you wanted to get done, it’s ok. Tomorrow is another day and you can try again.
Don’t measure yourself against others. Focus on you and where you want to be and do everything you can to get there. Do measure your successes. Some days, it takes everything in me to walk out to check the mail, but when I’ve done it, I call it a success.
Please tell us about Blush Skin Bar.
I am an Esthetician and Makeup Artist based out of Carlsbad, traveling throughout Southern California. I have been working in this field since for over 15 years. For skincare, I like to specialize in treatments that lean more toward the clinical side, really trying to treat the issues that my clients may experience. I am always trying to educate myself in the latest techniques and trends and constantly on the lookout for the best beauty products. I believe that natural and organic skincare has come a long way in being able to give people the results that they desire. So, whenever possible, I offer products and treatments that are not only effective, but good for you and the environment. Obviously, these products won’t replace fillers and plastic surgery, but hopefully I can prolong the time in which my clients will seek out these more invasive treatments. (However, I totally believe in these treatments as well!)
I started my career in makeup artistry and have a deep passion for it. I’ve worked in all areas of the field from photo shoots for magazines to students for their school photos and dances (which I love) to brides on their wedding day. I’d say that my style is an “enhanced natural” look, which I think a lot of brides like to achieve. To look like a more glamorous version of themselves.
No matter the look or the treatment, I try to put as much time and care into each one of my clients and I want them to put into themselves.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Don’t laugh, my favorite book is by Dr. Seuss – To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street – about a child’s creative imagination.
