Today we’d like to introduce you to Desirae Groves.
Desirae, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been an artist. I encapsulate beauty. I have a need to express. Whether it be music or visual art, it is my thing. I have always known that my career would somehow express itself through an art of some form. My primary platform has easily been hair and expression of self. I LOVE to capture energy through the photography of my work. I want to convey emotion. There are so many levels to this. So, to be direct and answer your question, I started at birth, if I may say so haha. My mind works within the emotions of beauty. Oh my gosh, there are so many forms. My path has been a hard one no doubt. My story is long. If you sit long enough to listen, there are moments in which you will cry with me, and then you will laugh. Then maybe you will get angry for me or with me. I think, then after we get into depth about it, sift it a little, then you will join me in a sense of our fresh humanity.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Are any roads that are part of your destiny smooth? Ya, I guess that there are some rest areas along the way, for sure. But I think that many are difficult. What other way is there to flex your spiritual muscles?! Grow. ….One word, PERSPECTIVE! Ahhh… so many struggles… I think that I would tell anyone coming up in my industry, “If you love it, don’t EVER quit!”. Then again I would tell the same thing to anyone that is pursuing their OWN dream. Know that you MUST expect that it is going to be crazy. Set your expectations. Stay humble. Be diligent. Be patient… wait. Chill out and don’t be too serious. Stop serving yourself but rather, take the perspective that this life, it is all about serving others… and time! Time is going to pass anyway. You might as well be doing something productive, something that you love. I think that if you do what you love you will, as they say, “never work a day in your life.” Oh ya. So I say, just GET IT ALREADY.
Please tell us about Dez Does Hair.
I am an artist. I express emotion through visual and musical arts. I specialize in color correction but as weird as it may sound, I love to personally help and whatever correction that I may lend. I LOVE to make something that was once considered unusable, unmanageable, sad, colorless, lifeless, or emotionless. I like to breathe life into that thing. No person is a thing so rather, I should say, that PERSON because I LOVE people… Humans are amazing. Honestly, think about it, we breathe without a thought. Our hearts, the essential part of this life, they beat without our input. We act like we know. Oh, do we know? If you are still following, haha, I am known for beautiful work. What sets me apart from others? If I may be so proud, I must say, I Love people, and I love to cast a glow into their life via my work. Essentially hair artistry.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I think the thing that works best is to always stay true to your path. I think that all of those things come to those that wait, are patient, mentoring, networking, etc. Work hard and just do what you do because you love it. Don’t strive to be anything other than who you are. Stay pure in this life. Stick to the essentials. Stay grounded. It will come to you if you keep faith and stay real. Because why else? Trust in God. Ask HIM! It gets better after that. I mean, you’re asking me… It works.
