Life & Work with Dominic Mabile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Mabile.

Hi Dominic, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started SEA RAT SKATEBOARDS almost five years ago when I couldn’t find the skateboard I wanted to ride. I was lucky enough to know people that helped me get some uncut blanks to make a few shapes for myself. One thing led to another and now I’m almost 4000 boards in with no signs of slowing. I’m truly blessed I can work out of my garage and create skateboards in the way I think they should be made and look. The. beauty of skateboarding is you can do it your way which I fully take advantage of.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been an enjoyable ride I’ve been able to take part in lots of really cool things in skateboarding that I would have never been a part of prior but with that being said I’m on my 5th 20 hour day in a row trying to get the boards done around my full time job. Lots of early mornings and late nights.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started out by customizing shapes for individuals which was something that was not really offered in the skateboard world but as the quantity started to increase I’ve developed my own shapes and have worked out ways to control the quality of my product. I sort all veneers and glue and press them all myself to make sure I get the boards to my standards. My dad shapes custom surfboards for a living and I’ve been trying to replicate that industry but in the skate world you can go to any shop and buy whatever they are selling you but with me you can get more control over what you get.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I’m still trying to get a better work fun balance the downfall of working from home is it just never stops this year I took six weeks off just to surf and skate with my friends and it was the best thing I could’ve done. I’m personally horrible at knowing when to stop working and have some fun. I make wooden toys just got to make more time to have fun with them.
