Life and Work with Emily Taplin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Taplin.

Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started taking photos at the age of 19 after having a terrible experience with my high school senior portraits. I decided it couldn’t be hard to do, after all, my grandmother and uncle were both well renowned portrait photographers themselves. In 2012 I attended school in Santa Barbara at Brooks Institute of Photography to earn my bachelor’s degree in Portrait photography. I have documented everything from Weddings to labor and delivery sessions. In the last 6 months I have found my true passion, timeless studio children portraits, enter Little Shrimps.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, it has been a seamless journey. If anything I have found that there is no need to rush the come up. We see so often now a days that everyone is so quick to get to retirement, so they work their hardest to be the best of the best by the age of 21. I am 31 years old and just falling in love with my own work. There is no race.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Emily Taplin of Little Shrimps – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My brand, @little_shrimps, specializes in the child, not the portrait. I of course want every mom to have a moment of their child where they look perfect, big smile, no wrinkles in their shirt etc. But as someone who speaks kid, no child is perfect all the time. So I tend to end up documenting the child doing normal things. I.e. picking their nose, licking their arm, searching for their belly button… things that we just will never understand about child or why they do these things. We want to remember the kids for how they were, and honestly, that might mean smelling their foot.

Setting myself apart from the other thousands of photographers in San Diego are two things: connection and comfort. I don’t often toot my own horn in this subject but I often refer to children as my “spirit animal”. Allowing me to really connect with them as humans. Secondly is comfort. Rather than a chilly, boring, sometimes scary studio space that your child has never been to, I have created a concierge service. I come to you, in your own home. Children respond to me best in their safe space. This also gets rid of that whole getting in the car argument 5 minutes after you’re supposed to have left. 🙂
