Life and Work with Fernanda Perez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernanda Perez.

Fernanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started one day that I quitted my job, I got home really frustrated because my boss was really mean to me and all of my coworkers, I started thinking of ideas on how to start my own creative business since it has always been on my mind. I was tired of making corporate logos and wanted to illustrate whatever was on my mind and take a break from everyday life. I started illustrating nature-related stuff and end up with a bunch of cool illustrations, which I didn’t know what to do with them, that’s when I had the idea of wearable art. I now own my company (Marfil Designs), in which we sell fun and colorful silk scarves that feature my original artwork.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have found myself with a lot of challenges along the way, it certainly has not been easy, but It all has been really worth it. I always remember that if you are not willing to fail, then you are not willing to succeed. Failure is always going to be part of a successful business, so my best advice is to learn from your failures so you can always be better on what you do best.

Please tell us about Marfil Designs.
Marfil Designs is a creative business from Tijuana México that creates hand-made silk scarves. All scarves feature an original artwork print by graphic designer Fernanda Pérez. Designed to be worn and enjoyed everyday, they are perfect for adding a pop of color to your outfit and can be worn ´bandana style´ around the neck, as a headband, on your purse, the options are countless, the styling is endless! and that’s when art meets fashion.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The best piece of advice I have for a young woman just starting her career is to always know your value as an artist and to not be shy about showing your art, social media is a really great tool for promoting your talents so never doubt about using them for this purpose, the key is to be really constant.
