Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabi Nehring.
Gabi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved photography. Everything began on my tenth birthday when my mom gave me a film camera and I started taking photos of everything. That was when I knew I wanted to be a photographer. My professional career started when I was in college. I was studying marketing and took photography classes that I fell in love with. My university was in a small Brazilian town and I started taking social photographs for the community newspaper, as well as doing free shoots for families and friends.
In my last semester of college, I took an internship that brought me to Hawaii where I continued taking photos and started thinking about creating my own photography business. After graduating, I worked at a famous photography studio in Rio de Janeiro and started to build a client base. As my love (and work) grew, I decided to break off on my own and do wedding, event, people, and food photography. That’s where Gabi Nehring Photography began.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting my own business was actually pretty smooth. I’m not the kind of person who says, “I want a bike,” and then buys all the equipment. I knew I wanted to build my own business, so I started slow. I worked for a little while, and then I went and bought a different lens. I started step by step, growing over time.
I would encourage anyone thinking about starting a business to simply (and slowly) start. My tip for photographers is to take pictures of everything. Photograph all subjects, styles, and contents to see what you like the most and then you can decide what it is that you want to specialize in.
Please tell us about Gabi Nehring Photography.
I specialize in people and relationship photography, specifically weddings, engagements/couples, maternity, and families.
I also do landscape, food, and fine art photography, including custom frames and prints of people, places, and other artistic elements. My photography covers a wide range of subject areas and I’m passionate about capturing angles and candid moments that aren’t always present in traditional photography.
When it comes to people, I strive to tell a story with each photograph. I prefer taking unexpected photos rather than posed ones. I tell all my clients to be themselves and enjoy the moment. Photography shouldn’t be intrusive; it should be enjoyed.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
When I’m not taking photos, I spend time with my 15-month-old daughter, Luisa. Life with a toddler is busy, so I try to make sure I have time for myself every day. I’m always trying to stay inspired by listening to music, browsing social media (primarily Instagram) for different photography pages and styles, connecting with other creators, and taking business and photography workshops.
As a mom and business owner, I don’t often have time to read, so something I’ve also started this year is listening to e-books while I edit photos.
