Today we’d like to introduce you to Guadalupe Magos.
Guadalupe, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be some sort of writer. I have always been drawn to reading and writing and I’ve kept a diary for as long as I can remember. Writing has always been my outlet. I grew up in a home where communication was not always exercised as much, so I turned to write all my thoughts and feelings down on paper. That helped me so much because I would still “vent” about what I was going through. I feel as if writing has kept me sane all these years.
My freshman year in high school, I remember speaking with a counselor and was provided with some of the elective options, one of them was journalism class, so I immediately chose that as a course. I began as a reporter and worked my way up to the Ads and Business manager, which I loved! Handling that side of the newspaper helped me dip my toes in the marketing world. We had ads for several little shops and restaurants around our school and getting to work with them was such a fun experience. My greatest accomplishment was becoming the news editor for our school paper. I still get butterflies in my stomach remembering when I was offered the role. It was a very surreal and humbling experience from which I learned so much. By far, one of the best days of my life.
My dream after high school was to venture to Minnesota State University to pursue my journalism dream and hopefully, once I was done I’d move to New York to get a job at Cosmopolitan and work so hard that one day I’d be their next editor in chief.
I had huge dreams then, like any 16 years old would, but the reality of the world was a lot different than what I imagined. I was not able to go to the college I dreamt about, became a mother at 21 and I have a great boss and co-workers but nothing has ever been able to fill that writing void for me.
Writing has always been in the back of my mind and last year, I finally decided to take a leap of faith and start blogging. It was hard at first because I was worried about what people would think or say about me. I was always wondering if they liked the content I was putting out or if it was interesting. Luckily, my friends and family were very supportive and I found that other moms and women could relate to the content I was putting out and enjoying it. It has been a wonderful experience ever since!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life has an interesting way of playing out. I didn’t do any of the things I had dreamt about, but I’ve always been a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I mentioned that I became a mother at a relatively young age, and my entire world shifted. At the time, I was not sure whether it was good or bad or what I’d do with my life if I wasn’t a writer, but now, I’m convinced that this was the path for me.
Giving up on those dreams was incredibly hard but my passion for writing has brought me here. My passion for writing gave me the courage to start a blog because it has always been what lights the fire in me. I’ve never stopped writing and I don’t plan on stopping. That same passion brings me happiness every day and every time I write something and share it with my followers. It allows me to be me, to express who I am, what I love, what I think, what I feel. It allows me to be free and that is why Soy Libre was created and why I chose to name my blog that.
One of greatest challenges I face now is time. I work full time, am a mother, and now a blogger. Time is my greatest enemy sometimes, especially since I make my own deadlines and try to be as consistent as possible. But I’ve learned that there’s only so much that can be done in a day. I’m trying to be patient and kind with myself and remind myself that if I don’t finish something it will be ok.
My biggest piece of advice would be to not give up on what makes you happy. For me, I knew being a writer is a career that involves a lot of hustle and bustle. Especially the direction I wanted to go in, which was into work for a magazine or a newspaper. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t wonder how my life would have been if I just pushed through. I’m happy with the career I chose and the creation of my blog because it gives me the opportunity to write, share what I love, and be part of such an amazing community, but I must admit that I hate having to wonder. There will be many obstacles in life or people telling you no, but if you love something and are passionate don’t give up.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Soy Libre – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Soy Libre is a lifestyle blog. I always try to be as transparent as possible because I want people to read my blog and feel like they’re talking with a friend. If you know me, then I want you to feel like we’re talking face to face. I’ve always had a love for fashion, I’m a huge foodie, obsess over makeup, and can’t live without coffee. I enjoy discovering quirky places around San Diego and sharing them, so it makes me very happy that I now have one place to put all of these things I’m so passionate about.
I’ve started two series, fashion Friday’s and wellness Wednesday and have received great feedback on both. Fashion Friday’s is all about my favorite fashion pieces from where I buy them to why I love them. Wellness Wednesday was something that I decided to start because I found myself very sluggish and irritated sometimes with Wednesdays. I would just feel like we were still days from Friday and it would sort of annoy me, so I started brainstorming on how I could take my negative views on this and turn it into a positive. Thus wellness Wednesday was born. I wanted to turn those negative ideas I had in my head into uplifting, motivating, inspiring thoughts and share them with people in case they were in the same boat I was. In this series, you will find anything from healthy eating to positive reminders for all you mothers and non-mothers. I think everyone goes through down days and sometimes we just need a little uplifting and positive vibes, so I hope that this provides that to all my readers.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I think women are still underestimated to this day, but in the end, that just makes us stronger. We are just as capable of leading in this industry because we love to communicate and express ourselves. We love to connect on a deeper level and that’s what makes us great influencers and successful in what we do.
