Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Loegering.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
So, I have always been a visual and creative person. I remember filming skits and music videos as a little kid and even photographing and producing my own magazine in elementary school. Fast forward to college where I studied Film Production with the intention of doing something with film and fashion. I was always drawn to short fashion films showcasing a brands newest collection. While I still marvel at these, I found that photography got me closer to where I wanted to be, in fashion. I sort of fell into it as it wasn’t the biggest leap from studying film. I knew how to work a camera and the retail boutique I worked for asked if I would start shooting for them. From then on, I started working for a few other brands, shooting their campaigns and that was it, I was in love.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In terms of the technical side of photography, it can be a little daunting starting out because there is so much gear to choose from. When I first started shooting, however, I was using a DSLR that my work already had, so that wasn’t really an issue. It wasn’t until I was really trying to start taking photography seriously as well as honing in on the style I wanted to achieve when it was a little difficult to sort through all the brands and styles. I basically started religiously stalking my favorite photographers trying to learn what cameras they used to start a database where I could compare gear and figure out what was best for me. In terms of advice, you always hear this, but it’s really true that you need to just get out there and start shooting. Because I had to shoot every single week for the company I work for, I got more and more comfortable with the camera, and that was really crucial!
Please tell us about your business.
So, right now, I am only pursuing photography part-time due to the fact that I work as an E-commerce Manager & Marketing Coordinator for a retail clothing company called Elison Rd (yes, the company that asked me to start shooting in the first place). I also own my own brand where I make jewelry, art, ceramics, leather goods, etc, as well as doing social media content creation & consulting (gotta love that side hustle). I ultimately want to pursue photography as my longterm career! In a world that is incredibly digitalized with visuals and advertising thrown at us every which way, I want to create images that leave a lasting impression.
Who have you been inspired by?
In terms of creatives, Byrdie Mack and Jasmine Dowling are two of my biggest inspirations. One is a photographer, and one is a graphic designer/illustrator/content creator. Both have made a mark on the fashion industry while staying completely true to themselves. I could stare at their visuals all day. They are the true definition of ‘girl boss.’
Secondly, my sister and my mother are huge inspirations to me. They are driven and so incredibly kind, and I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am without them!
