Life and Work with Helene Dossmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helene Dossmann.

Helene, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a French girl living the dream life in sunny San Diego. I started embroidery as a hobby a year ago, when my bestfriend casually told me about a girl selling all her threads and hoops… little did I know, I would get so obsessed and turn it into a business a few months later!

LAROBE is inspired by absolutely everything I see, hear, read, as long as it’s fun and cute and fun and fun and fun. Because life is too short for boring outfits, right?

Every piece is handmade and one of a kind but I will happily create designs in an other colour or size! I also love custom orders. Nothing makes me happier than creating the piece of my client’s dreams.

At first, launching LAROBE was mostly a way to express my creativity but today, there’s nothing I love more than building the brand and watch it grow.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing women makers/entrepreneurs who gave me the best advice and recommendation when I started. I was shy and didn’t want to share my work but once I did it, I was so happy and proud.

As a “small brand”, it is difficult to get noticed so, this is something I am still working on. But I would say that, not giving up even when things are not going as fast and great as I hoped, is the key to success.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with LAROBE – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I do handmade embroidery on any fabric – tee-shirts, sweaters, tote bags, shirts, dresses, jackets, vintage items, hats… as long as the material fits, I can embroider anything!

All my designs are entirely hand stitched and my drawings are one of a kind since I don’t use transfer papers (I draw directly on the fabric).

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Don’t give up. Be proud of your work. Go to creative/women/entrepreneurs networking events to be inspired and meet amazing people. We are so lucky to live in San Diego where this community is huge, leverage the power of it!
