Life and Work with Jenea Sutton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenea Sutton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started in a coffee shop in the Bay Area. I was teaching at Soulcycle at the time and felt like I needed more in my life. Soulcycle was a beautiful beginning for me, however, I felt like I had hit a wall and didn’t know where to grow from there. I was in a place where I was sick of working to make other people’s dreams come true and felt like it was time to start listening to my dreams. I reached out to a good friend, Leida Ebrahimi, and wanted to pick her brain about how it was to open and own her own business in her 20s.

Leida leads the conversation by saying, opening her own business was one of the best decisions she had ever made. So, I told her I couldn’t shake this idea. A cycling studio that catered to the majority of young professionals. An urban space with industrial fixtures, unapologetic energies, and a home that accepted everyone no matter where they come from.

As the conversation came to an end, she excused herself to the restroom. She made her way back to the table and said she had just gotten off the phone with her husband. She told me she could have a group of investors on this project if this is something I wanted to move forward with. A little over a year later, Edge Cycle opened in East Village, San Diego.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a roller coaster ride for sure. Between permitting conflicts, construction delays, and our space is flooded with six inches of water all the way around a month after opening; obstacles would seem like an understatement.

But we’ve still been able to move forward with our heads held high.

Obstacles happen. There isn’t much room around them. You can look right, you can look left, but the only way out is the way through. Challenges bring lessons, and lessons bring growth. As hard as the journey may be, sometimes, it is important to remember lessons and growth are important components to life, success, and expansion. Sometimes, you have to fight for your dreams to come true. Which is why it is important to have dreams that mean so much to you, that they are worth fighting for.

My advice to any woman out there with a dream or a goal would be to start. Don’t think about the how, or the things that could get in your way. Just begin. Start asking questions, start with the things you can do versus the things you can’t, and see what it turns into. If there is something that you can’t shake that you know you need to do, then it is meant to exist in this world. And that’s up to you!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Edge Cycle – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Edge Cycle is an indoor cycling studio. We hold 45 min full body, intense cardio cycling classes. Edge Cycle is a mix of motivation and badass mentality. With F*@K Basic being our motto, we believe in living life on the Edge, not playing it safe, and going against the grain. It’s a safe place for massive growth, but once you walk in, you will be pushed to your 100% for that day.

As the founder and CEO, I balance the business and marketing end of things along with training the instructors and teaching classes. In addition to being a fitness professional, I am a motivator. I believe in people and their capabilities. Whether it is my staff, instructors, or riders in the community, I allow them to do the work. I am just a guide to take them from point A to wherever they would like to go.

It’s one of the most fulfilling things having people reach out on social media mentioning that Edge Cycle has gotten them through hardships, difficult relationships, and has made people feel more emotionally secure and powerful. Edge Cycle is not only helping our clients but has also helped myself and my staff. It’s a place of inspirational exchange, where everyone gets a little piece of the pie.

We aren’t a brand trying to be something we aren’t. Edge Cycle is different because we come with every flaw and imperfection wanting to become that much better each and every day. We are real and transparent in our interactions, creating a place of authenticity. Edge Cycle isn’t about the workout. It’s about you, and what you want to achieve emotionally, mentally and physically.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women can do anything they put their mind to. I make a point to remind women in my classes how powerful they truly are. We are as limited as the box we put ourselves in and as powerful as we let ourselves expand. I say let’s not listen to the stereotypes society and media engrain in our heads. Let’s look within, spend time finding what we want, and go get it.
