Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesus Perez.
Jesus, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In my case, being a hair stylist came as a total surprise, nobody around me is in the beauty industry and never had a hair influence growing up. I always thought I would end up studying something fashion related. Flash forward to my college years, I started taking general classes and trying to figure out what to major in.
At the same time, I was living my college party life and always wanted to go out on the weekends. I started styling my friend’s hair (flat ironing and curling) so that she would come out with me and not complain about having to do her own hair. I then started playing around with makeup, and by then, I figured out I was enjoying the process of glamming someone up. So, I decided to go to cosmetology school, I was really nervous and clueless. Never in my life had I cut or colored hair.
I graduated and moved on to being an assistant to another hairstylist. Learned a lot, practiced, cried, and at times, I wanted to give up because I wouldn’t understand many of the techniques and formulation. It all later started clicking in my head, now I have been behind the chair for about four years at hairdrezzers on fire salon. I love how unexpected my career choice was, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely wasn’t easy, you are gonna want to give up and quit. You are gonna doubt yourself many many times. But you gotta keep going if you know that whatever you’re doing is your passion. Practice and perseverance are two very important things to keep in mind.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a hairstylist. I cut and color women’s hair. I love to do both, but I’m more known for the way I color hair. Turning dark hair into blondes is something I do on the daily.
Coloring hair is such a fun thing to do, looking at women’s face when they see their hair looks like what their inspiration picture was is so rewarding.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I have always been very independent. I started working since I was 16 years old, I think that thought a lot about responsibility and professionalism. Also, being so independent and working at a young age has taught me to not wait for others to do things for you and to make decisions based on your own gut feeling.
