Life and Work with Johanna Karcher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Karcher.

Johanna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I come from a very creative and artsy family. I remember painting when I was in kindergarten and knew I wanted to be some type of artist. I wanted to paint or sing or play the piano. When I began college, I began studying music… I was going through a difficult time and dealing with depression. One day my grandfather gave me a set of oil paints and brushes and said why don’t you try painting again? I decided to take a class and that was it. I was completely obsessed with art and art history and creating. I began painting plants and flowers that were beautiful and colorful and happy… because that was missing in my life. I wanted to surround myself with works that were how I wanted to feel inside. Now there really is not a day that goes by that I do not paint or think about my grandfather and how grateful I am for the influence he has had on my life.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have struggled at times, of course. For me the hardest part was being my own worst critic once I began to receive recognition for my work. Self-doubt and self-sabotage, Overthinking, being hard on myself if a piece did not turn out absolutely perfect.. or what the idea I had in my head of perfect was. Starting a piece and thinking of what people would think of it was very detrimental to my actual quality of work so I began creating paintings that I told myself I would not show to anyone. I would say to myself like a mantra… “this one is for me and I don’t have to show it to anyone”. And the work improved and I stopped struggling while painting and it became fluid and natural again. If I had any advice, it would be to paint what you love no matter what that subject is, be fearless and make mistakes. Some of the biggest mistakes I have made are what has made something beautiful and to not think about if people will like it or not. Do not take the critics seriously. Most of the time they have never held a brush

So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My pieces are created with oil on canvas. I love painting large works and the subject matter being anything from nature. I specialize in what I like to call floral portraits. Up close and highly detailed portraits of flowers
