Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia McManus.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for over 20 years specializing in hair color, working in La Jolla and Little Italy. Currently, I’m working at Hyde Edwards Salon. When Microblading caught my eye, I was so intrigued! Learning a new craft has been the challenge I needed. I think being in the beauty industry has given me an upper hand in understanding brow shape, color, dimension, and how to enhance a persons face according to their face shape. I’m loving it! I love how you can give someone that has absolutely no brow hair (due to chemo or aging), new brows! It can be life-changing for that person. Brows have become quite an obsession for people these days, both women and men, so it’s been fun to help them achieve their brow goals. For microblading, I work at a Medispa in Bankers Hill called Radiance Wellness and Beauty.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This is a very challenging business, I’m not gonna lie… first, you have to be very comfortable with blood. You will have clients that bleed more than others. There is such a huge range of skin types, from young 20 somethings to older very thin and delicate skin. Knowing how much pressure to use is key as to not completely botch someones face up! In the beginning, the idea of tattooing someones face really stressed me out, I had many sleepless nights for sure. Practicing and taking as many classes as I can have helped build my confidence. Classes and webinars are extremely expensive in this industry so most of the money I make goes right back into education and using only the best tools and supplies.
Please tell us about Yourbrowstylist.
Microblading is a form of permanent make up. Using a handheld device made of a series of needles, I draw very fine hair strokes, creating a 3D effect. I also use a mechanical device for shading or what we call Powder Brows, this is great for people that already have a lot of brow hair and just want a bolder look, like using a brow pencil. I use several colors to create an ombre effect. Also by mapping out the brow, I’m getting the clients brows as symmetrical as possible. This is great for clients that don’t have any brow hair, missing the tail of the brow, the fronts of the brow are uneven, scars in the brow, or just wanting brows to appear thicker, darker, bolder…
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Instagram is always a great resource for me to check out other artists work and keep me motivated. On my free time, I love to cook, Food 52 is a great app.
