Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Sather.
Kathryn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ever since I was a young kid, I always loved animals-and I mean, if I saw a dog on the street, we needed to stop and pet it. As I grew up and dealt with deaths and just having to take on more responsibility I always found comfort in my animals. I honestly have no idea what I would do without them. So of course I wanted to go into a field where I would be able to work with animals all day. I started with taking any volunteer opportunities I could, I ended up traveling and volunteering in Mexico and Costa Rica working with all different species and sizes of animals!
When I finally started working, I was lucky enough to get a dream job of mine as a kennel technician at a boarding facility. I loved the job so much! I ended up being involved in an accident that totaled my car. I was luckily okay and had no serious injuries. But this gave me a chance to do something different and work for myself! I quit my job and started San Diego Dog Daycare that soon changed to San Diego Pet Daycare!
This gives me the chance to work with smaller groups and be able to truly have that one on one time with each animal in my care! I started with just an idea of caring for dogs and cats during the day. Now we are expanding into rabbit care, and soon even horse care! We went from only offering daycare to now boarding, sitting, and some training! I finally feel like I’m doing what I was meant to! I wouldn’t trade this work for anything else!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Just like anything else, there are bumps in the road and sometimes it doesn’t even feel won’t doing. But if you’re passionate about something bumps are just that… bumps. They are something you can get past and get going on your road to success!
Please tell us about San Diego Pet Daycare.
San Diego Pet Daycare offers Daycare and Overnight Care Services, along with so much more! It all started with Doggy Daycare, where we offer pickup and drop off services. So while you’re at work, your pup can be playing at beaches and parks. Now we also offer Dog Walking, some Dog Training, Sitting and Boarding for Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits. And soon, we will be expanding into Horse care! I am proud to say that we always make sure to only take on small groups of animals at a time to make sure all clients are given one on one time!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I feel like a great way to get a mentor is to start with volunteering; it’s a great way to get your foot in the door and start networking with people in the field!
