Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Lafferty.
Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania on a farm. I was raised by a single mother after losing my father to lung cancer at age 12. I lacked a lot of motivation, positivity and was depressed for many years. Throughout high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do when I “grew up”. Went to colleges that didn’t matter with no clear path of my future. I went because everyone else was going. After two years, I met my fiancé, now husband and moved to San Diego. I told myself I would go back to school, but I fell in love with working. Many years of being a vet assistant, leading to my role as a property manager. After realizing property management was not for me, I took my real estate license to use and am now a business manager for one of the top agents in San Diego. I never thought I would be where I am today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. I moved away to a new city across the country with no friends or family. I knew no one and had no jobs lined up or even a clue on what I wanted to do. I was so passionate about moving to California that I did it with no plan. I had $100 to my name. My advice to anyone who’s looking to do the same is don’t expect that perfect apartment, perfect job when you move. Find something that will be comfortable, temporarily, and then work your ass off to get what you really deserve.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a real estate agent but I do not do traditional sales. I am a business manager to one of the top agents in San Diego county. I am different because most agents hire people like me to keep themselves organized, pay attention to detail and so they can focus on what they do best, which is selling. I’m proud of my team because we are constantly ranked #1 in our office and our office is the number one Keller Williams office in San Diego.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Absolutely. Women are so powerful and smart and the media makes it seem like we’re all a victim. I think women are perfect for those opportunities that require detail-oriented, compassionate & passionate individuals.
