Life and Work with Kerry Oberlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Oberlin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kerry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up as a serious athlete fueled my passion for sports and fitness. I graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science. After graduation, I moved to California to gain experience as a fitness specialist with plans of moving back to North Carolina, where my family lives, after a couple of years but California stole my heart.

I started as a personal trainer for 24 Hour Fitness and worked my way up to become Fitness Manager. After my first year as a fitness manager, I was awarded as the Fitness Manager of the Year for Southern California. I was honored to be the recipient and knew that helping people in Southern California with their exercise and health goals is what I was meant to do. I enjoyed educating new personal trainers, but my heart led me back to personal training because I missed being able to connect with clients on a deeper level and have a direct impact on their lives.

Now, as a mother and role model to my two girls and as I slowly enter the aging population myself, my focus has started shifting towards longevity including youth education and applying optimal strength training throughout all stages of my clients’ lives. I am encouraged by the revitalized focus on health, well-being, and exercise, I coach my 8-year-old students the same way I coach my 95-year-old clients!

Exercise should never be a burden in one’s life and that is why I am constantly integrating new ways to keep people fit in enjoyable ways. I actively pursue alternative training methods and offer a wide variety of services such as aerial group personal training, TRX training, the traditional strength-based regiments, personal training and more.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Personal training has always fit my personality and lifestyle, I knew it was what I was destined to do. With anything in life though, nothing ever comes easy. You have to be a self-starter, positive and motivated for your clients at all times, even when you are having a bad day. I work at odd hours of the day, usually early in the morning before work or at night after work, but the hours don’t bother me because the success of my clients is rewarding and satisfying.

My advice for women starting their journey is to always remember what started your passion and make your profession’s education a priority. Just because you might have earned your degree or certification, it does not mean you can stop learning all industries are continuously advancing and changing. I feel my success is credited to me adapting and evolving to the changes in the fitness world. There are new science and research that changes and benefits my training style every year. I no longer am only concentrated on keeping the body looking good, I am now also focused on creating healthy bodies to last years and years.

Please tell us about Workout With Kerry – Personal Trainer.
As a personal trainer, I specialize in optimal strength, flexibility, and balance training, but I also educate my clients on injury prevention and longevity, I honestly truly care for my clients and that is what sets me apart from other personal trainers. I love sharing my fitness knowledge and helping others better their lives. I believe you have to exercise for the rest of your life so might as well have fun doing it.

Providing the most beneficial, effective and enjoyable workouts for my clients is what I am known for. I accept clients of all ages and at any age, exercise can be fun. I have most recently incorporated aerial personal training into my services, it is not only exciting but challenging. With aerial personal training, you don’t have to count reps or lift weights, so you don’t even realize you are working out, but you achieve the results you want.

I have come a long way in my career but the thing I am most proud of is my clients. My 95-year-old client is shooting his age on the golf course and my 8-year-old is doing inversions on the aerial silks. I love when my clients come back from a vacation and tell me how they worked out on their trip, because I provided them with the necessary skills and education, so they knew exactly what to do. My clients are the reason that I do what I do, they keep me wanting to come back to work every day.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
My advice to a young woman just starting her career is to always strive to be the absolute best at your craft. Take the extra time to stay up-to-date on the industry, take care of all of your clients’ needs, and always show up on time and the money will follow. It is the extra steps you take and care you provide that will set you apart from others.
