Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Vinatieri.
Kim, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I never intended to work in the beauty industry, but I was always surrounded by it growing up. I was a member of California all-stars competitive cheerleading for 8 years and competitions were all about the big hair and heavy makeup. But after high school, I decided to go to school for business. After a couple semesters, my mom saw how unfulfilled I was and suggested I try cosmetology school. I took her advice and never looked back.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Getting a start in the beauty industry is not easy. The general rule is 80% of people who finish cosmetology school will not end up working in a salon. After you get your license, it is not smooth sailing. If you want to be successful in the industry, it’s a good idea to assist under a senior stylist for at least a year. This means low pay, hard work, long days and little recognition. In my opinion, this is the most difficult part. My advice for anyone wanting to start in the beauty industry is to buckle down and suck it up during this time, work hard and learn as much as you can. You will be set up for success and it will be worth it in the end.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I grew up in San Diego. This is a beach town and blondes are always in style! One of the amazing stylists I assisted for in the beginning knew the importance of being able to create that perfect beach blonde for clients in this area. I fell in love with foiling, balayage, basically, any and all lightening techniques.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I think Instagram has completely changed the networking game. You have the opportunity to reach thousands of people in your area by hashtagging and adding locations. It also makes it a great way to find amazing stylists in your area. A lot of salons/stylists host classes. If you find a hair page that you really admire, I would suggest reaching out and asking if they will be teaching or hosting a class. Most salons will allow outside stylists to join and it’s a great way to meet a stylist you admire and learn something from them at the same time.
