Life and Work with Laura Loaiza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Loaiza.

Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, the beauty industry was something I wanted to do since high school. But college wasn’t an option for my parents. I studied psychology and the University of San Francisco but my side hustle was cutting hair in the dorms. And no, I didn’t know how to cut hair but everyone loved their cuts so why not! Hahaha! I graduated and worked in at several California state prisons. I went onto my masters in Psychology while traveling and teaching as a professional salsa dancer.

Graduated, worked in my career while traveling for dance and booking the dancers to get their makeup done in my hotel room. The hustle was always in me. To make a long story short, I always worked in my profession but the beauty industry was always my side hustle. While working for the crisis and suicide prevention hotline (which I still do occasionally) I decided to finally enroll in esthetician school. I went to school during the day and worked at night. I graduated and soon after had my daughter, Isla (pronounced like Island in Spanish). After having her, I decided to take a leap of faith and jump into the beauty industry, finally!!! So, here I am. My dream. Where I always knew I needed to be, but too scared to fully jump in. It can be hard when you’re so used to a laid out corporate world with consistent paychecks and health insurance. But it was time. I know it will take time, but so far, I absolutely adore my clients and the industry professionals I’ve met.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh gosh, no. I’m still at the beginning stages so definitely not. I’m still building my business. I know what I want and what I don’t want. So, I’m okay with building it slowly. I have second guessed my decision a billion times but then something happens that reminds me that I am right where I am supposed to be. I think we all know right? We all know in our gut where we are supposed to be, even if it’s not where others expect us to be or want us to be. I think it’s so important for us women to follow our hearts. I always say something worthwhile is never easy. Be kind, be humble, help others. That always makes the journey a much better road. I get asked a lot as a mom if I have to work or if I want to work and I say BOTH! Why can’t I be a badass mama and badass boss too?! We can do it!!! I want to teach my daughter that work doesn’t have to be something you loathe going to. I want to teach her that work can be filled with the good feels, the dreams, the wishes, the wants. Doesn’t mean it will be easy, but if you live your life’s purpose, it won’t seem so hard.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Brow & Beauty – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I hope to really make my clients feel special and loved. I may not be the best, yet hahaha but I put a lot of love into my business. I want them to walk in from a long day at work, or a long day taking care of kids/home and just feel relaxed and cared for. You really won’t be just a client. I think working for over 14 years as a therapist you learn a lot about compassion and self-care. It’s so important and I want to translate that into Brow and Beauty.

Who have you been inspired by?
So many! Where do I begin! My small but fierce mother. After losing my father, she decided to continue traveling the world with him. She goes alone for weeks at a time. That’s just so admirable! My fierce female friends in the beauty industry, Alexis Ayala owner of Alexis K and Nancy Ngouy owner of Studio NN to name a few. They are forced to be reckoned with but never boast or brag, they just ooze humility and sweetness. My sister who sacrificed her own career to raise my three favorite kids on this planet (aside from my daughter of course). Just so many. I could go on and on.
