Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Leah Helin.
Dr. Helin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For years I wanted to be an Orthodontist. The “SMILE” was symbolic to me that someone was happy and feeling good. I worked toward that for decades, following graduating with my Bachelors or Biological Sciences, I was packed and prepared to head to Dental School, until I made an unplanned left turn and headed toward Chiropractic School instead. I couldn’t live in the small hole that is the mouth. I wanted to better health using the entire body. I haven’t turned back since!
Has it been a smooth road?
“The road to success is always under construction.” Boy, is that ever true? Chiropractic is a field of medicine which is still very misunderstood. Not only am I constantly teaching about what I do but because I am a petite female I feel I need to prove how beneficial what I can be for a person is. I personally treat the entire body, not only with Chiropractic adjustments but I also use stretching, soft tissue release techniques and movement. Sometimes the struggle lies in the lack of trust the public has in a treatment style they don’t know. Other times its running a practice, being a business owner and a Doctor wanting to save the world all at the same time!
I would tell all young females starting this journey to buckle in, stay true to what fuels you on this road because we have every ability to help others and change the world, one body and spine at a time!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with your work – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
While as a chiropractor my bread and butter is the adjustment or the “crack.” I specialize in Active care. We together work on soft tissue, muscles, joints, and the skeleton in the manner that the patient best responds to. It really is a 3-dimensional approach which allows the body to rest and heal better and faster.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Talk to everyone. Every person along your journey has a lesson to teach you. The ones who resonate the most with you, keep them in your inner circle. I found respect and consideration for every person I meet has been the best way to connect, find mentors and earn trust the community needs to accept you are their Doctor.
