Life and Work with Léna Yumi McMaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Léna Yumi McMaster.

Léna Yumi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Togetherness and hair have always been a way of life for my family and I. I feel blessed because I have always been surrounded by so much love, wisdom, kindness, and positivity and I just want to share it with everyone I meet.

I went to cosmetology school to learn my trade and became a licensed Cosmetologist and went to college to study business. In junior college at MiraCosta, my CSIT professor Cassoni (Computer Science Information Technology) really took me under his wing and encouraged me to broaden my knowledge in that department. He became one of my best advisors in my educational background yet and encouraged me to run for president of the IT club. It was then that I discovered my love for SEO and then social media. I started to help advise small businesses on their social media accounts and just found that I really enjoyed it. So, long story short that’s how I ended up here and how I found a bunch more friends around the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To be honest, what is life without a few bumps in the road? It’s not the bumps in the road that defined me but gave me the endurance to achieve greater things. I’m not perfect and there is always more to learn and always room to grow and that’s what motivates me. What I’ve learned is that it’s not the material things, titles or what other people think of me that decide who I am but all the intangible things that fill my heart with joy. The human experience can be challenging at times and there are times that you will feel like giving up. But, there is always a light at the end of every tunnel. Never give up on your dreams, always remember that you are unique and that’s what makes you so special.

Please tell us about Hairitage Family Salon.
I’m a hair designer and manager of our family-owned salon. I specialize in all hair types 1-4 and subcategories (a-d). Yes, there are different hair types: straight, wavy, curly, and kinky/coily. I’m also an avid supporter of natural hair care and will be transitioning to all Organic Beauty/Haircare products by the end of the year. Another thing that’s really important to me is supporting small local businesses and businesses based in the United States. What I take most pride in is educating my clients about how to care for their hair and being that encouraging friend that also makes them feel beautiful.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Find something that makes you happy and learns as you grow. I found that the key ingredients to success are love, passion, and hard work. In order to meet new people and build connections, you have to put yourself out there and engage in meaningful conversations. Always be prepared for any event or function because you just might meet someone who will change your life.
