Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Burton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hey there! I am the founder of mama + B.A.B.E. which is my blog and my soon-to-be business!
Growing up, I always loved the idea of having a blog – even before I knew what a blog even was! At the age of 10 I started to create my own websites and just wrote whatever I wanted on them. As I grew older, I decided I wanted to start up a blog and write about something I have always been extremely passionate about… motherhood and pregnancy! I was born to be a mom and I believe pregnancy is the most magical thing in the world. I stopped myself from starting up a website though because I was worried what others would think about me. After my daughter turned one, I realized I was tired of being controlled by the thoughts of others and I just decided to go for it!
So, mama + B.A.B.E. is my website! B.A.B.E. stands for birth, antenatal, baby education as I am currently enrolled in an online course to become a Childbirth Educator. I use that knowledge and my experience as a mom, nanny, and former preschool teacher to write posts on my website. I specifically discuss motherhood, parenting tips, pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, mental health, marriage, and basically anything else that I feel compelled to write about! My goal is to always be encouraging and to help someone out there who is struggling. Once my course is completed, I plan on using my certificate to teach affordable, one-on-one birth classes to help moms who want to know all of their options. I want to provide as much support as possible throughout the entire pregnancy – not just be there for one class and never see them again. I believe it is so important to have consistent and reliable support from as many people as possible during pregnancy and I would LOVE to be there for as many moms as I can.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not always been easy.
My biggest obstacle when starting up my website was getting the courage to just do it. I was worried that people were going to judge me for what I would say or do. I also didn’t want to come across as “annoying” every time I posted or promoted my blog.
My husband helped me get to a point where I realized that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. You have to do what makes you happy! I started blogging at the end of October and MAN, I wish I had started sooner! I hate thinking about how much time I wasted worrying about the opinions of others!
My best advice to anyone who wants to do something but is concerned that others will judge them is to JUST DO IT! You will always encounter mean people (especially on the internet) but do what you love and focus on yourself. You will be so happy you did!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with mama + B.A.B.E. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I want to use my platform to help out others and just give my best advice from my experiences. I believe there is no “right” way to parenting and it is such a good thing to get as much advice as you can. I believe that you will never know EVERYTHING – so you should always be reading, studying, listening and just learning anything and everything you can.
Once I start my Childbirth Education services, I want to offer affordable one-on-one classes and I want to provide consistent support throughout the pregnancy and motherhood of my clients. I think so many childbirth classes are so impersonal: you go in, hear the basics, maybe ask a few questions, and never see the teacher again. I want to be there for my clients. I want them to know they could call or text me and I will be there to answer their questions. I want them to know that I will be a constant supporter and cheerleader for them! And I think that is something that sets me apart from other childbirth educators.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
My most important piece of advice for a young woman who is just starting her career is to follow her heart – as cheesy as that sounds! You need to do what makes you happy; Find your passion and ultimately, just love what you do.
