Life and Work with Lola Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lola Davis.

Lola, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve had a love for hair as far back as I can remember. It all started with my Barbie’s hair, then my own, then my friends. I decided to start cosmetology school at Paul Mitchell straight out of high school and soon discovered how passionate I truly was about our industry.

For me, hair is not only about outward appearance, but also about nurturing and helping others. When someone sits in my chair, there is a special trust that begins to form. It starts with hair and grows into much more. I have the trust from my clients to help them represent themselves to the world, to mold their image. For me, being a hairdresser is about connection and impact.

After graduating from cosmetology school, I went on to assist other incredibly talented stylists, further my education, and hone my skills. I have worked behind the chair, doing editorial shoots, fashion shows, and charity work as well. It has been an amazing adventure thus far, and I am so incredibly proud to call myself a hairstylist.

I currently work behind the chair at Valente Hair & Co in La Jolla. I am also working on creating new tools for the industry, which will hopefully be available by Summer 2019.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing worth having is easy to achieve. Even though I have a natural understanding of the science of hair, it still took years of practice and patience to better my skills. Even having been in the industry for seven years, I still find myself challenged in some situations. My craft will always be a work in progress, requiring further education, new skills, and practice. If you continue to grow your skills, your business will follow.

My advice to young women starting their journey is to stay determined. Sometimes, life will throw punches, but understand that is part of growth. If you find yourself losing motivation or questioning your path, go back to your roots. Small moments gone wrong can feel overwhelming or discouraging, but keep your eyes on the bigger picture. What sparked your passion for your journey? Focus on that, and everything will fade into the background.

Please tell us about your work.
I specialize in hair extensions. I have in-depth knowledge of various methods of extensions, as well as extension styling, cutting, and updos. I specialize in choosing the correct method and application for each individual client, to suit their needs and hair type.

My skill set also includes creative cuts, color, blonding, airbrush makeup, and wedding styles. I am always looking to grow my skills, and have an emphasis on education in my career.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I am thankful to say that the beauty industry is supportive and empowering towards women. I think we are beginning to see positive change in favor of equality and women in leadership, in general. I am proud to say female leadership in my industry is not uncommon, and I look forward to seeing even more opportunity for women in all career fields.
