Today we’d like to introduce you to LorAnna Pollock.
LorAnna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m born and raised here in San Diego. During high school, I worked as a receptionist at a salon by the beach where my passion for hair began, so I decided to go to beauty school. It was the best year of my life! I met so many great people and everyday was so much fun making memories. After receiving my license on my 21st birthday, I started working at the salon I was a receptionist at which later lead me to managing that salon! After working behind the chair for 6 years, I decided it was time to do my own thing and work for myself, and start my own “business”. I moved over to a salon in Hillcrest and rented a booth for 3 years continuing to build my clientele and learn new techniques. I’ve recently moved to a beautiful salon downtown renting a booth at La Wa’ Meraki and will continue to perfect my craft. Hair is a passion and it’s definitely what I was meant to be doing. It has come so natural to me and I’m extremely grateful that I’ve found something that I don’t consider work!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road getting to where I’m at, but the journey has been fun! I’ve met so many people, heard so many great stories, and have experienced almost every part of the hair industry. When I decided to move salons, it was the hardest decision because of the unknown. It’s always a gamble with how much you’ll grow and if your clients will follow. Although I believe that if you trust your gut and work hard, you’ll become successful. Working in a service industry and learning to communicate with clients can sometimes get difficult. Making sure the consultation is detailed, informative, and clear is key to result in a satisfied customer.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hair by Lo – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in cutting and coloring hair. I love blonding, men’s haircuts, and tape in extensions. I am also a Halocouture distributor. I am most proud when my clients come to me bragging that they have finally found a hairdresser who understands blondes! I love delivering the best possible service and trying to meet my client’s expectations while keeping the hair in the healthiest condition. I won’t sugarcoat the truth and won’t promise something I can’t deliver. I am also very proud of the fact I have a perfect 5-star rating on my booking site with almost 300 reviews!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Finding a mentor is very important in our industry because of its constant growth. There’s always new techniques and tricks and even styles that we need to learn. Social media has definitely been a contributor to that! I also feel that your mentors can change as your personal growth develops. I’ve had multiple people I consider a mentor and it’s always been at different stages in my career. Once you’ve mastered where you’re at, it’s important to continue to grow and move onto the next venture. Bouncing off ideas with my coworkers is always a fun way to learn what the best way of achieving a goal is.
