Life and Work with Marie Nailz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Nailz.

Marie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am from Arlington, Texas born and raised and moved to sunny San Diego, CA about a year and a half ago. Today I am going to give you all an insight into my career and how it all started.

In the mix of going to school full time achieving my high school diploma and associates degree at the same time on top of working full time at a fast food joint, I grow a curiosity for nail art.

I took what I had and started. I had two lawn chairs and an office desk I found on the side of the road. I began practicing and practicing day and night. Continuously investing in myself. I began to develop my skill and I decided to take it to the next level and dropped out of school. As crazy as that sounds to the majority of the population, it was the best decision I EVER made for myself because although education is good; SELF-education is the best. It took a lot for me to learn and understand that. You see, I didn’t come from a family with money. I didn’t come from a family that was all smiles and happily ever after. If I wanted something more from life than the continuous cycle of poverty, I have to get it out of the mud. I had to put myself in a position to succeed. I began to focus on and mind my business. When I tell you I stayed up late nights and sometimes even ALL night, I did. You see the love I have for nails and this growing nail industry really pushed me to step down on the throttle that much more. I figured out what I needed to succeed in the beauty industry and did just that. No matter how many road blockages there were, I hurdled over them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. On top of trying to advance my skill and run a business. Rent was due. Food needed to be on the table. There were times where I felt defeated… I felt like I wasn’t good enough… social media comments were no fun to read when my work was not at it’s prime… I cried. But you know what the people who supported me made THAT difference and the people who doubted me actually motivated me. And a huge shout out to my husband Pete. He has made such an impact on my life and has been my mentor the whole way up as I have been for him. I love you.

Another struggle was trying to figure out what products to use, what brush to get, how to do certain designs, how to get clients. I know how hard it is out there and that’s why I want to give back to the nail community. I really love to teach and the amount of feedback I have gotten from girls who took a class is amazing. I want to train ladies to do great work. I love to see the moment it clicks for people like “ohhhhhhhh, that’s how it’s done” or when my students smile so much because they were able to mimic my technique. I will be offering many types of classes so stay tuned. I have many projects on the way for the nail industry. Currently, I am working on my first YouTube tutorial! I am so excited!

And for all the women and men starting their journeys it’s doesn’t matter how old or how young you are or what the circumstance is, the world is yours, baby. My best advice to you all is to first understand that no one’s life is better than yours. No one has it better than you. We only have one life and you need to learn to appreciate where you came from and make the best of it. Loving yourself is number one. Number two, Tune out the noise from the naysayers and get away from the toxic people. Now, this is easier said than done but you really need to do it! Make sure you have a clear vision of where you want to be (write it down) and manifest it. DO WORK! Invest in yourself forever. If anything I have said has touched you, I would really love for you to follow me because I have so much more in store including a book and so much knowledge. I want to see you succeed.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
All the time, many childhood experiences set a bar for me. I have learned so much and I am very very grateful for everything that has happened in my life. I needed every single bad time and a good time.
