Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariyan Bahadarakhann.
Mariyan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in a Refugee Camp in Cambodia and moved to America at the age of 2. I was raised by a single mom who barely spoke English. My mom raised 7 AMAZING daughters by herself in a one bedroom downtown Chicago apartment. We grew up in a rough neighborhood with gang violence. Money was always an issue and we were poor. The struggle was real. I told myself, I will do whatever it takes to have a better life. I knew I had the passion and drive to be successful.
Because of our struggle, I decided to study Finance in college while working for different banks starting as a teller. I decided to get into real estate when the market crashed in 2008. After graduating, I did real estate part time while working as a General Manager at Lenscrafters. I was 26 years old.
A couple years after, I decided to go back to school to obtain my law degree. During law school, I became a broker. I was running my small brokerage while attending law school. I was a full time student my first year while still doing real estate. After graduating law school, I opened a second part of my business doing loans. As of now, I am growing both my real estate and mortgage businesses,
I am very passionate about my clients being happy with our services. I have a strong team and looking to grow every year. During my free time, I like reading, asking questions, and learning about quantum physics and our great universe. I want to be a motivation and example to our future generation…
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was in a male dominated industry when I first started. I had to be a strong business woman and work diligently to gain respect. I stood my ground and always had my clients’ best interest first. As a business woman, I became knowledgeable in my field and was always learning. So when my counterpart tested me, I was always on my toes.
I stood by my motto always. (H.I.T.T) Honesty, Integrity. Transparency and Trust. I did not give up and proved my worth by diligent and hard work. I worked long days, and nights. I did not allow anyone to threatened me and I always stood up for what I believe. I went to get the necessary credentials to grow my practice and made sure I am always learning.
I never allowed anyone to push me back. I am up for a challenge and even when people made me feel less than them, I was cordial and came back with facts and stats. The key is to never give up and surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Don’t ever allow anyone to say you cannot do it because of X, Y, and/or Z. Don’t take things personally and live your truth. Everything else is just noise.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Yes, I believe women are naturally more nurturing so service positions in sales are great for women. Financial sales and other sales are a growing woman industry.
