Life and Work with Misty Kearl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Kearl.

Misty, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After moving to San Diego from Canada in 2014, I had no clue what my work plans were going to be while taking care of four kids at home. My husband continuously encouraged me to sign up with a modeling agent along with the kids & in 2015 San Diego Model Management signed us all up. Since then, I’ve done 22 commercials, 4 TV news episodes as a live model, a TV reality race & countless print campaigns for several different brands which doesn’t even count all the jobs my kids have booked separately.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have found that living a healthy lifestyle leads to many opportunities including work. As far as keeping fit, it hasn’t always been easy from dealing with asthma, osteoarthritis, foot surgery from bunions, low thyroid, thin blood (thrombocytopenia), anxiety & constant fatigue from it all. Regardless of everything, I haven’t let any of it be a permanent roadblock. Instead, I try to turn everything into a stepping stone & have seen rewards from doing so. Balance is everything & listening to what my body needs physically & emotionally. So, if I need some extra me time to do nothing, I’ll take it in order to rejuvenate & keep the candle burning brightly the next time I get back at it. I know that success happens when giving up is not an option.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a model with San Diego Model Management which includes acting in commercials as well as print for various brands. What separates me from the others is that the model industry typically looks for girls over 5’7” & under 30 years old and I’m 41 years old, 5’2” & a mom of four.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My main focus is being genuine to who I am as a person, my perspective & standards while at the same time keeping open to learning as much as I can with continued education and feedback. Exploring new things has added value in building skills & opportunities. As an example, I was referred by a friend at the gym to act in a commercial for a food company which then resulted in additional referrals to new directors. You never know who’s watching so example is everything. In return, it has helped others see my worth which has built valuable relationships & opportunities. I feel the law of attraction is very real & whatever you put your mind to, usually comes to pass. Since the age of 8, living in Canada, I knew I wanted to live in California but had no idea how that would ever happen. Now, I’m living in sunny San Diego. Gratitude has definitely been my game plan because it’s what fulfills me. Positive thoughts bring positive experiences & that would be my main advice on networking with like-minded individuals.
