Life and Work with Nicole Sandvig

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Sandvig.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew I wanted to be a hairdresser. After a few years of sowing my wild oats, I felt ready to commit to the school. While in school, I did an externship program at a local salon and later became the owners assistant for a year. Four years later, I moved back to Temecula, so I could be closer to my family. It was so hard starting from scratch and rebuilding my clientele, but I found Acappella hair design and they helped me grow! There, I fell in love with eufora and the systems they have in place for hairdressers. My journey has taken a long time, it wasn’t easy but I feel everything has fallen into place and I’m where I need to be. Happy behind the chair laughing and singing. If you know me, you know.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I used to be fearful of cutting hair. So, I aligned myself with people who could mentor me and took every class I could. Now cutting hair is my jam and eventually, my goal is to be a teacher. I want to give back. Some advice I would give to newbies in the industry is to find some companies/systems you connect with and educate yourself. Take every walk in, stay late, pass out cards, do community events. Most importantly, never give up.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I feel like a good consultation sets the tone for the whole appointment. Guests want to be heard and I want them to know I’m listening and not just doing whatever I want to do. The people in my chair know I’m
Always taking the latest classes including sunlights balayage and the sally Rogerson cutting academy. I feel like I’m a pretty well-rounded stylist specializing in extensions, balayage, grey coverage, and precision cutting. (I can cut a mean bob.)

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Sometimes, we create our own barriers by being fearful or not believing in ourselves. Luckily, our industry promotes and encourages female leadership. I think that’s why I was drawn to it.

Wonderful article about a lovely, talented stylist! What the article fails to capture is Nicole’s great personality. If she wasn’t a rock star behind the chair, I’d still go to her because she is so much fun!
