Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Sandoval.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nikki. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started making beaded jewelry with a few of my friends about 20 years ago. This hobby can become pretty addictive! I started giving gifts of handmade jewelry to my family and friends. My family are very supportive and suggested I start my own business to share my work with everyone. So, here I am, giving it a try. I started My Urban Gems in June 2017, and am still making it work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My strongest asset is being the artist and making the jewelry. Luckily, I am also a photographer, so I can get my own shots of my products. My biggest struggle is getting my jewelry out there and seen, and getting people to the website. Starting your own business takes work, but I would advise women just starting out on their journey to not give up on their dream. Do a lot of research before you start on the type of business you want to start, and the target market you want to reach with your product. You have to work at it every day to be a success.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with My Urban Gems – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My business is handmade jewelry. I love making necklaces and shopping for all the beautiful gemstones, pearls, and crystals that go into my designs.
My signature necklace is a 60” wraparound necklace that is very versatile and can be worn in several different ways. I have recently also started making hand-knotted necklaces. Hours can go into making a hand-knotted necklace, but the end product is so worth it.
I love working with color and coming up with spectacular combinations in my designs. I take great pride in putting together unique products for my customers that they can enjoy for years.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I don’t really think that I have any barriers. I think my main struggle is to make my jewelry stand out in an impacted market.
