Life and Work with Rachel Schaerer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Schaerer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rachel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Yoga has always intrigued me and I always wanted to try it- I even had it on my vision board before I ever practiced! As I was transitioning moving back to San Diego from Los Angeles I picked up a management position at a yoga studio. That’s where my life changed. I realized that yoga was the addition to my life that I needed. In the beginning, I was taking two classes per day and trying to learn as much as I possibly could. Within the past two years, I have completed two 200-hr teacher training. I started my own small business, teaching private yoga lessons in students’ homes. They say, when you know, you know- I know that I am pursuing my passion in life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges I had was standing up in front of people and teaching! This is surprising because I would say that I am a pretty sociable person. Yoga reminds me that it is okay and actually good to be uncomfortable; that is where the growth is. Another struggle I had along the way was deciding to be completely self-employed. This was a tough decision for numerous reasons, including emotionally. I had grown so close to the community at the yoga studio I was managing, that it was hard to step away. But, I knew the only way for me to grow was to spread my wings and fly on my own.

Please tell us about your work.
I specialize in teaching private yoga lessons to students in their homes. This allows me to give my students the specialized attention they need to make sure their alignment is correct, prevent injury, and focus on my students’ specific wants and needs. My students are what I am most proud of. It is incredible to see how far they have all come in their practice, mentally and physically. I strive to make my classes fun, light-hearted, challenging, and relaxing.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I read a ton of books about yoga. Not only the physical aspect of yoga but also the philosophy. Currently, I am rereading “The Yamas and Niyamas Exploring Yogas Ethical Practice” by Deborah Adele. Coming back to books like this one reinforces that practicing yoga is a daily practice that should be practiced both on and off the mat. Yoga is more than just fitness, it is a lifestyle and mindset, a way of living. I also go to other teachers’ classes and am a student often. This helps me explore new ways of teaching and keeps me accountable for my own yoga practice. The best way to teach yoga is to practice yourself. Without a self-practice, there is no teaching.
