Life & Work with Roshun Wynne, Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshun Wynne, Jr.

Hi Roshun, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started when I was four years old, running down the hallway spiking a Nerf football just like I saw going to my uncles’ game and on television. I became a three sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball) until I moved to San Diego. Here I focused solely on football and basketball. My athletic role models were Gary Payton, Allen Iverson, Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders. Being from Oakland, I made sure I was tough emotionally and able to take anything an opponent threw at me.

Fast forward to now, I have been a part of the creation of the #1 NBA basketball video game (NBA2k), which I have been a part of for the last six years. I was awarded the nickname “TheStickUpKidd” which was given to me by the Voice of the Drew League, George Preciado. That 2017 summer I beat out world champion Metta World Peace for Defensive Player of The Year. I accredit my defensive intensity to my uncle, Tylo, who instilled in me that anyone can put the ball in the basketball, can separate yourself from everyone else because of your defense. i thank God I listen I am now an owner of my own brand The Art of Defense and Fit2Wynne which I have been able to teach many people how to get back in shape, kids discipline and the importance of playing defense, and the fundamentals of the basketball game. My ultimate goal in life is to inspire the youth of tomorrow in whatever I do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur the road is never smooth. You have to put in a lot of effort and work to give a product that will be attracted to other people. There are not any shortcuts in the journey. There will always be ups and down you just have to keep setting small goals along the way to accomplish your bigger goal. The biggest problem I have run into would have to be dealing with my producer of my products. Sometimes you have to be so precise to make sure that your product is being made the correct way. When your product is not done the way you want it, it makes me irritated because I put a lot of time and effort into my craft and my product. I expect people who I allow onto my projects to treat them as if it’s their own project. Those are the days that are tougher than other, because you’re expecting to have your product at a certain time and a certain day. One has to remember that the day you give up on yourself is the day that you will fail. For me as long as I have a breath in my body I will continue to pursue excellence to the standards that I set for myself and the people I allow in my inner circle.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for my contribution to the basketball community. I have given this game of basketball over 28 years of my life, but I wouldn’t want to change it one bit. I was able to find a niche in the game of basketball that hasn’t been tapped into on the highest level in regard to training. I love playing defense and giving my opponents hell. Making their day on the court stressful brings me peace. I make it personal to be the best defender. The Art of Defense I hold dear to my heart because it’s been a part of my life ever since I could remember. It has taken me all over the world, I just had to realize that I had to get out of my own way! Once I mastered getting out of my own way the upscale of my life has risen tremendously. I have been able to separate myself from other through my diligence and perfection in my craft through constant training, studying of the game through people that I have looked to and through the greats of the game where I can pick and choose what things they did great in which I could incorporate it into my game. I never stopped learning, that’s is why I continue to elevate my level year in and year out.

What were you like growing up?
I was a very outgoing kid. Growing up in a Christian family, I was introduced to God at an early age. He was the foundation and always will be the foundation of my life. I remember my first speech, sitting on my great grandmother’s lap, Love True, saying the bible scripture John 3:16 in front of the church. That has shaped my life and allowed me to stay rooted in the word of God no matter if I stumbled, I knew my foundation. At an early age I was doing my sisters 3rd grade homework before I even was in school. I was in honors classes throughout my life. Graduating with honors in every school that I went to. I took my education serious, I made sure to never allow people I am around or the environment I was in to dictate the person I became. I had a goal and made sure I was going to accomplish them no matter what I needed to sacrifice without having to step on anyone’s toes.
