Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Breslin.
Sage, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
“I was born a poor black child in Peoria, Illinois…”- sorry, couldn’t help the Steve Martin joke. 😉
It’s hard to summarize the journey I’ve had, getting here, to this time in my life. I suppose that’s why I chose to write a memoir- because there was no simple answer to this question- so often posed by people I meet.
I can say that life hasn’t been easy- I’ve endured violence and trauma, physically disabling accidents, unhealthy relationships, but even after flat-lining eight times, I’ve picked myself up, reconfigured and started again.
Life has served up extraordinary feats for me as well, I like to think because I have been resilient and persistent.
My first “real” job was for Nasa- at 17.
I earned my BA in three years (UCSD) and my MA and Ph.D. in four years (Northwestern).
I ran the La Jolla Half Marathon nearly 20 years after a paralyzing injury.
I had five kids (naturally) after spending $100,000 in fertility testing and being told I could never have children.
I’m a best-selling author with five books on the market, the success of which I attribute to my storytelling style and willingness to share openly about my life.
I’ve been able to live all over the world and have built practice after practice, and I currently offer breakthrough and transformation coaching and counseling- sometimes in my office and sometimes while walking the beach.
After many years of my own therapy and introspection, I’ve learned how to prioritize myself, invest in my own self-care and to set boundaries with others. I have left violent and unhealthy relationships behind and now advocate internationally for women trying to recover from Stockholm Syndrome.
I’ve learned that life is short and the only solution is to suck the marrow out of life- every chance you get.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Given my exhaustive response to the last question, I’ll just add that I would encourage all young people to take the time for self-discovery and self-care before focusing on other people and pursuits.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sage Wisdom Institute – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I served as a Trauma Psychologist for more than two decades, specializing in facilitating recovery and management for those with PTSD and C-PTSD. I have worked with servicemen and women in all branches of the military and protective services and really have a special place in my heart for that population.
But, that work is heavy lifting and often – uphill.
I now spend most of my time using a similar skill set to help folks break through limiting beliefs, circumstances, and relationships so that they can embrace connection, joy and success. Working with a motivated population that already has a foundation in wellness has allowed me to excel in my work, assist many, and enjoy the process with a little less personal wear and tear.
Who have you been inspired by?
I think that my mother and nana have been extraordinary sources of inspiration for me. My British grandmother (who was actually Welsh and Irish) spent her early years in India and only returned to England after losing her sister. She married my grandfather – a Swiss soldier- and moved in with his family immediately- even though she didn’t speak a word of Swiss or German! She had four children, immigrated to the US and adopted a new culture and country with grace and ease. She taught me so much about diplomacy and grace- and how to stand your ground -sometimes in ways where others don’t see it coming.
My mother has taught me about resilience and persistence. At 12, she had polio and was in an iron lung for a year. It didn’t stop her from graduating from Stanford, Magna Cum Laude, fluent in nine languages. She had two children just after graduation, supported my father as he developed his career and eventually had a career of her own. She fought and won battles with her health and has always remained positive and engaged.
I have been inspired by others in the public eye, but have had foundational inspiration from the women who raised me.
