Santana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was graduating from the University of Victoria with my degree in Child and Youth Development, I had a lot of passion but was faced with the reality that as a special needs teacher, I would barely be getting by and I certainly wouldn’t be making enough to get ahead. After growing up on food stamps and hammy downs, I had promised myself I would create a better future for my self but didn’t know-how. I couldn’t afford my master’s degree and I didn’t want to change fields because I truly loved the impact I was having on children and their families but I knew I needed something.
A family friend shared this opportunity with me and I was immediately intrigued. After learning that the same two Stanford trained dermatologists (Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields) who create Proactiv were the doctors behind Rodan + Fields I knew this was unlike anything else out there. Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields originally launched their brand Rodan + Fields into high-end department stores, like Nordstrom, but decided to leave the glass counter because they knew they could have a bigger impact through the direct sales channel. Think about it, not everyone has access to a Nordstrom’s but everyone has access to WiFi.
Eighteen months after launching my business, I reached the top 2% of the company and then 2.5 years in I reached the top 1%. Since then, I have been passionately sharing how these products have changed my skin, my confidence, and my financial future!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey of entrepreneurship is hard. It’s rewarding and so exciting but it is hard work. We always tell people Rodan+Fields is a simple business but it isn’t easy! The time you put into practicing your technical skills and mastering your craft, you should spend the same amount of time developing your mindset, and attitude!
I struggled a lot at the beginning with negative self-talk, my inner mean girl, you know what I’m talking about right? The voice in your head always telling you that you aren’t good enough, she tries to tear you down every chance she gets because she wants you to stay in your safe, comfortable little bubble. You have to be stronger than her, you have to learn how to tell her off and you have to know she’s WRONG! Journaling and personal development books have really helped me through this, I wouldn’t say she’s gone for good, but she sure is a lot quieter!

I am an independent consultant. I share my love for skin health, for inner and outer confidence, and for women empowerment through my social media platforms and in my community.

3) I ask friends for referrals. We live in a word of mouth world where the recommendation of a friend holds more weight than any billboard. I share with friends what my brand is all about and ask them to keep me in mind and connect when they chat with friends they think would love to learn more.
I specialize in community. My favourite part about what I do is the community of encouraging, inspirational, hard-working women. When people work with me, they get a turn-key community to be part of, they have me cheering them on every step of the way and they become part of the family! Whether you are one of my customers or partners, I make it known to you that you are a piece of my puzzle and they are helping me change my life and the lives of so many others.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
When I’m at the gym, in the car, or doing housework, I ALWAYS have a podcast or audiobook in my headphones! A few of my favourite books are You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, Take Control of Your Life by Mel Robbins, Super Attractor by Gabrielle Bernstein and Get Over Your Damn Self by Romi Neustadt. These books push me to grow and continually show up as the best version of me!
Podcasts are my jam! My go to’s are Your Virtual Upline, Guide Culture, 6 Figure Influencer, Betches Brides (this one is a must for all my brides to be out there) and Soul CEO. If you are not committed to being a life long learner in your fields and in life, your business will plateau. If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room.
