Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Carrico.
Sara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in makeup after my enlistment in the United States Navy. I know a far cry from the makeup industry. Growing up, I was always a tomboy, both of my dads were mechanics, anytime I could get my hands on a car I would, from rehapolstry to oil changes, I was all about it, but I always had a secret love for makeup (little did they know). I can still remember telling them I was going to makeup school and how their faces looked. Seriously, priceless! But they encouraged me to follow my dreams. So, it was 2012 and I was two years into my bachelor’s degree and I wanted something else, something more creative. So, I looked into the cosmetology program at Bellus Academy and fell in love. The minute I told my husband, he immediately pushed me to pursue my dream and has been so supportive of my whole career. Even though the first years when a lot of the work was for free because you were trying to build a portfolio and get your name out there. Thanks, honey! Now, I am fortunate enough to take the jobs that I want to and that I am passionate about. I am finally comfortable.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think that any road is smooth, everything takes hard work and dedication. I feel if you are passionate about the career you want to pursue it’s only you that can get in the way of it. I feel as human beings we are so hard on ourselves and we set such high standards and deadlines but to persevere we need to sit down and have a talk with ourselves to say hey it’s ok! Everything will work out the way it should. Being a mother of four amazing children sometimes, it can be tough to juggle work life and personal and I feel like a lot of mothers feel like you can’t have a career, raise children and not feel guilty. It’s all about balance and sometimes, it takes a little while to find it. To those just starting out, I want to say that it may seem like things aren’t working according to plan but it will and keep on pushing! Don’t give up.
Please tell us about Makeup by Sarai C.
I specialize in wedding, boudoir and special events. I feel what sets me apart is my passion and my ability to really listen to what the client needs and wants. I feel like a lot of woman sit and my chair and say “make me beautiful” but what I see is that they already are. All I do is accentuate their already beautiful features. I think the beauty industry sometimes sets such a high standard for a woman to try an conform to, so when they sit in my chair, I reassure them they are perfect the way they are. Makeup is made accentuate, not to erase already gorgeous features.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Well, where to begin, I came from pretty humble upbringings. My mother was a single mom of four, whom I had always admired because no matter how bad things where she always woke up and got ready for a full day of work with a smile on her face and a heart full of positivity. Those mornings, she would get ready with music blasting sitting in front of the mirror singing and applying makeup.
As a child, I would just sit and watch her in awe, secretly wanting to be her (because I was such a tomboy). Watching her apply her makeup with so much joy and so effortlessly sparked a passion within me that wouldn’t be realized until I was an adult. Growing up, I also admired my older siblings because all of them had a hand in the artistry world that would later influence my creativity in the beauty industry. My brother Sergio even though being deaf always had such a love for dancing and expressing himself through the love of music he would feel the vibrations and dance away. My older brother Maurice and my sister Irene loved to draw, so again, I would sit and admire their creativity by blending the colors and drawing precisely the right line. My big sister believed in natural beauty she would take me on these hike/walks and always made me appreciate the beauty of the world around me the colors of the flowers and how the sunrises and sunsets looked. I never realized both worlds could coexist until I became a makeup artist.
While in school, I looked back on my childhood with all of the wonderful influences I grew up around and it helped me. Every time I pick up my makeup brush, I remember my beautiful mother in her effortlessness, I remember the blending and precise line work my brother taught me, I see the natural beauty my client already has because of my amazing sister and me have such passion because of my brother in the way he danced. All, if it helped to mold and influence the artist I am today. I have all of them to thank.
