Today we’d like to introduce you to Selena.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business as a sophomore in college. Combining my interests in business and photography, I created a social media marketing business called @alltheoceanblues on Instagram to help photographers and other artists grow their following. I promote artistic works on my account and donate a portion of the promotion sales to support ocean conservation efforts. In addition to promoting artists’ work on the Instagram account, I also sell a Lightroom preset guide, gift items for photography lovers, and an original eBook that teaches photographers how to monetize their social media.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Creating my own business was not easy – there were many challenges I faced along the way. There are a lot of logistical challenges when anyone first starts an online business, and I had to invest countless hours into my business before I started seeing profits. My advice for other women who want to start working in social media is to build your business around something you are passionate about. I have always loved photography and fashion, and building my business around those interests makes work such a fun and enjoyable process.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of. What you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others?
I work to help photographers, models, and other types of artists grow their social media presence. I work with both local artists from San Diego and artists from all over the world. The goal of my business is to help my clients gain more followers on their Instagram accounts so that they will gain more exposure and new business opportunities.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
It’s important to project confidence, even when you are just starting out. Many women, myself included, have been indirectly taught that men are more suited to leadership positions, and this can make us feel apprehensive about taking the lead. I have learned to trust in my qualifications rather than giving in to the feeling of imposter syndrome. If you believe in your abilities, then your clients will too. And finally, my last piece of advice is to be kind! I used to get very upset when clients were rude to me; however, I realized that being rude back will accomplish nothing, and sometimes a kind word can make all the difference in the world.
