Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Bartlett-May.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a mom of two, a wife to my high school crush and a health and wellness advocate. In my previous life, I was a K-12 PE teacher but my current full-time job is working for Ashford University helping to run the adult peer mentoring program along with teaching a course. Last year, I started looking at my life and realized I missed the health education aspect of my previous job. I started a weekly Facebook Live series at work called “Wellness Wednesday’s”. In this space, I would share recipes, workouts, and mental health tips such as mindfulness with our students. After doing this for nearly nine months and gaining some confidence, I decided I wanted to expand my audience and share it with anyone who might benefit from watching. And so, Move with Mama was born. Move with Mama is a space where I authentically share about my life as I try to find balance with eating Keto, working out, dressing cute on a budget, and finding balance as a Mom, wife, employee, chef, driver, housekeeper, etc. I am naturally an introvert so this has also helped me to challenge myself by opening up to complete strangers and learn to accept unsolicited criticism.
Has it been a smooth road?
There is definitely a learning curve and I am still learning. I decided to break tasks into small goals and give myself timelines to reach those. My first goal was to just get a grasp of what Move with Mama really is about and post relevant content regularly. My next goal was to create an actual blog website which I recently did. That was a challenge because I didn’t have any past experience creating a site and had to learn as I went, trial and error. My next goal is to reach 10,000 followers, but that will come with time and consistency, I would also recommend getting a mentor to try to reduce some of the trial and error. I haven’t found mine just yet, but that isn’t for lack of trying. I am regularly emailing bloggers who I admire asking if they would mentor me. I am hoping someone will take me under their wing soon!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Move with Mama – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Move with Mama is all about finding balance! I eat a Ketogenic diet but I don’t stress about having a glass of wine occasionally or splurging on nachos one random Saturday. I enjoy working out but some days it just doesn’t happen and I don’t stress about it. I love feeling good in a cute outfit and my hair done but let’s face it, that only happens three days a week. I think my followers like to see what new recipe I am sharing, see my outfits and find out what sale I found and mostly, I think they find inspiration to live a healthier lifestyle.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I think the blogging world is great for women! Women love to share and we feel better when we aren’t alone in struggles. By joining the blogging world, be that as a blogger or a follower, you connect with people all over the world and gain a community of support. With that, comes opportunity!
