Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Bekkering.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sophie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a small town in Holland. I’ve always been fascinated with people and how we connect with each other. My background is in psychology and after I got my Ma degree, I realized that I wanted to go even deeper. I have always been an outside the box thinker and instead of going the traditional route of becoming a psychologist, I decided to go live in the jungle of Asia and study Tantra. Right now, I combine the more scientific approach of neuropsychology with the ancient tantric teachings. I have found that with the combination of these two, there is a lot of magic possible. I used to be scared to deeply connect with people and just like many other women have also experienced sexual assault. Going on the path I have been on has completely transformed the relationships with myself and others. The way how I feel in my body is radically different than how it was before. I was always caught up in my head, overthinking everything, living in anxiety and doubt. A disconnection from our bodies can often translate as feeling not worthy, and that is because we are disconnected from our life force energy.
I realized that when we work with these deep parts of ourselves it affects every single area of our lives. From how we are able to express ourselves to our energy levels and our general level of fulfillment.
Going through this journey gave me a lot of compassion for men and women. We live in a society that has so much distortion, judgment and shame about sexuality. I used to carry a lot of shame around this topic myself. I struggled with eating disorders and depression. I realize how important it is to feel empowered in our sexuality for men and women.
Today, I love helping other people to step into their fullest potential when it comes to love, relationships and sexuality. This is the place where our deepest wounds come up and it is so valuable to heal and integrate these wounds. I believe that the world would be such a different place when we would all have a healthy relationship with our sexuality and the ability to give and receive love. These two are so interconnected and part of the healing is to reconnect these.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. There was a lot of fear and doubt I had to overcome. There is always a part of us that feels not good enough and that is holding ourselves back. It was not easy to come out and take about controversial topics like sexuality. It was very scary for me in the beginning. I had to overcome the fear of being seen and being judged. For centuries, it was literally not safe for women to talk about this topic so we all carry that within us still on a subconscious level.
My advice for other women first of all is to reach out for support. It is so easy to feel alone in this and we are not designed to do this alone. It takes courage and there will be moments where you will start do doubt and fear comes up. I would advise others to love these parts of ourselves. When we start to judge or resist, we are only making it worse.
Please tell us about Mastering Intimacy.
I work with both men and women to help them to find freedom and empowerment in their love life and sexuality. I love creating powerful containers for people of a few months working 1:1 where we will do the healing work to release all of the things that are blocking you and holding you back. From there I teach people how they can activate their body and access the inner wisdom and power that is in their bodies. Once you are able to do that, you can learn how to use this energy and move it through your body and connect with others from a confident, relaxed and present state. I am most proud of the results I see in my clients. Often, there have been patterns that have been going on their whole life and it is so transformative to be free from that. I believe connection and self-love are the most important in life and I am so grateful to be able to help people access that.
What sets me apart? I see this topic as something that is not standing alone by itself but a holistic way that is interconnected to everything else. I use a unique combination of modern neuroscience and ancient tantric teachings. These two combined are very powerful. I also work with the subconscious mind so that we can access deeper things that a lot of people might not be consciously aware of.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Women are incredible! I find often that women underestimate what they are capable of. I believe it is critical for the world that women are tapped into her power and are sharing her unique gifts to the world. We all have unique gifts that the world is longing for.
